A Comprehensive Calendar of Festivals and Events in India

India is a land of festivals and celebrations. Over the wide expanse of the country, there are literally hundreds of festivals and celebrations that the Indians participate in. Although festivals like Holi and Diwali are more popular amongst foreigners and locals alike, it's the smaller and lesser known festivals that give the true experience of being in India.  ... read more »

An epic compilation by our very own Aarosh.

I challenge anyone to find a festival he's missed ... !

Fantastic!!

DrRudi Oct 29th, 2013 07:24

It's a thankless and unending task.

At a first pass:

No film festivals that I could see.

A labour of love by aarosh, well done indeed. cool::D:ThumbsUp

Is it possible that Durga Puja has been left out in the cold?

Amazing compilation.

My favourite...

Madras Music

Celebrated in Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Spanning some six weeks, a number of large and small kutcheris ...
Suggest "Thousands of..." because there are, and "a number of" gives no idea of the actual scale of the happening.

baap re baap - BRILLIANT JOB, Aarosh :) :ThumbsUp

 ... bongkers, you :D

Durga Puja comes inbetween Navratri and Dusserah :)
Heck - it can lead the list  :p

Another addition - Kali Puja [big, bhery big in Kolkata] - after Diwali, on the list :)
Celebrated on the same day as Bada [big] Diwali, actually.

One more suggestion Aarosh - the sub-heads - Festivals in May - if in all caps - makes the divide between months easier to decipher :)
FESTIVALS IN MAY
Information hierarchy [Blush]

Perhaps a couple of lines after each festival to describe it and/or a link?
By and by ? Perhaps ? :)
That'd be another herculean task - so maybe not.

Fantastic compilation.

Thank you for your suggestions and feeback.

I would request IMers to see for any typo errors and correct them. I may have made quite a few errors in my draft which was forwarded to Nadreg. I did try my best to avoid as much as possible, however I do not think I was 100% successful in that.

Your efforts in the arduous task of compilation outdoes any error :)

Have done the months in all caps, Aarosh. Hope that is ok.
Will get back on the others by and by. It IS a herculean task :)

Well done, Aarosh !!

Most invaluable.

nadreg Oct 29th, 2013 21:16

So, one thing I think that would be cool going forward, which Brishti also suggested, is to start writing articles for the festivals, starting with the major ones first, and linking to each one from this article. Eventually (maybe by 2018) we will have every one of these written up and linked.

The Diwali article is one we could start linking to, for example.
