Hi everyone, this is my first post here, looks a great forum! Am learning lots already! :)

Myself and my partner maybe moving to South Delhi. I don't mean my post to sound typically 'British' but my partner is not really into hot foods and does like his roast dinners, steaks, mash potato, pies, etc. (you get the picture)!

Are we likely to go very hungry because of this? Or are there plenty if any shops to buy 'western food'.

Thanks for your time in advance.

Hello

We are looking at the possibility of relocating to Noida from the US, at a very short notice.

My daughter will be 5 in Jan. Am looking for good, affordable international schools in the Noida or South East Delhi area.
My husband's work will be in Noida Sector 62 and I understand that daily commute from South East Delhi should still be okay?

We have no idea about Noida area schools. would be good if people with knowlegde can shed some light.

thank you!

Hi,

I am hoping someone may be able to help. I have a friend who has just moved to Gurgaon and is staying in a hotel whilst she searches for accommodation. Her pet cat is due to arrive in India soon but the hotel does not allow pets.

Does anyone know of a good boarding facility where her cat could stay until she gets her accommodation sorted.

Thanks,

Things move VERY SLOWLY in the midwest US...and as luck would have it my spouses company may consider a move to New Delhi just as I am accepted to nursing school here.

Does anyone have any experience with pursuing such a degree in New Delhi and would that training transfer back to the US?

Thank you...

Commuting South Delhi To Noida

I've been a IM lurker for a while now but am now taking the plunge :)

I'm an expat-Canadian (M) who will be starting at a job in Noida Sector 16 in December, the position will last at least a year. I have relatives who live in South Delhi (Vasant Vihar) who have kindly offered to let me stay with them for the duration. The problem then is what is the best way to commute daily to and from Noida and South Delhi?

There are many threads on here debating living in Noida vs. South Delhi but none of them discuss the details of how to commute.

From my research so far, I've come up with a few options and the pros and cons of each as far as I can tell:

a) purchase scooter/bike and drive myself
pro: cheap, I have always wanted a motorcycle
con: dangerous, sitting in traffic for 3 hours a day, I have no experience riding motorcycles of any kind

b) purchase car and drive myself
pro: safer than bike
con: sitting in traffic, expensive (depends on the car, but more than a bike)

c) purchase car and hire a driver
pro: Most comfortable option
con: Most expensive

d) hire a regular car and driver
Is this possible? How much would this cost roughly? This is one I haven't found much info about yet.

e) Take the Metro. It will apparently be running in December.
pro: cheap cheap, fast and modern ( at least from their pamphlet... )
con: Not living close to a starting metro station, long commute, cracks in the structure??!! ( http://www.zeenews.com/news550515.html )

f) Other ideas? Commuter Buses? Car pooling?

Thanks and hope to hear back from the IM community!

I never post new threads 'cos it's so scary but thought I would stick my head above the parapet and say what I have learnt.

This is very South Delhi and UK ex pat biased so apologies in advance.

Schools and where to live?

These are dependent on each other I know the South Delhi options well.
[For Gurgaon ask someone else.]

In particular I know The British School and The American Embassy School. Very different schools with a very different ethos so you need to visit and check which would most suit your child.

Different costs as well so the web sites are helpful.

Talk to them via e mail as soon as you think you might be moving. And things change so there might be no places and a few days later there are places available. There are other options Modern School, Delhi Public School, St Pauls,The French School, German School etc.

What many people do is enroll their children in a school and then look around and change. All much easier when you are here

Where to live:- Delhi is becoming much more cosmopolitan so the list is becoming endless.
South Delhi would be where most ex pats feel more comfortable.
Hauz Khas, Green Park, and the posher parts are:- Vasant Vihar, West End Greens, Jor Bagh, GK 2, Sundar Nagar etc.

Food is a biggy in our house.

AES do an Indian cooking course so you can learn how to cook Indian food and change the spices to suit the kids. So for one child I remove some food before adding extra spices.

Shopping for food and other stuff:-

It all depends where you live. So Modern Bizarre in Basant Lok/Priya sells everything including Tesco bacon and beef burgers.

Delhi Network is a helpful resource

Broadband options in Delhi

Dear All:

Moving to Delhi soon and will be taking my laptop with me there. I will be living very spartanly/simply for the first few months until my family joins me and we find our permanent residence. Thus, I may be moving around a couple of times the first several (5 or so) months I am in Delhi.

Having some form of broadband is going to be essential for me (e.g. Skype, emails, internet etc). Given that I am going to be moving a couple of times, does it probably makes sense to go with mobile broadband? I'm not the kind of fellow that will be taking my laptop to coffee places etc. around Delhi; it's just that I am going to be moving within Delhi once or twice and I don't want to go through the (perceived) hassle of getting a "permanent" broadband account until we find our permanent residence.

Now, a few questions:

1) My main question in this regard is how "good" is mobile broadband (i.e. is the service good throughout? What kind of speeds are we talking about?) Links to service providers giving details would be gratefully accepted.

2) How does one sign up for broadband? Can I join up from outside of India so that I can use the internet the day that I get there?

3) Do you need to have a permanent residence to open a broadband account? If so, would I be able to use my office/work address?

4) What are the monthly and one-time costs?

5) What kind of equipment do I need and where can I get it?

6) Since I won't really be running around Delhi with my laptop, should I just wait and get "permanent" broadband? If so, what kinds of permanent broadband delivery forms are there (e.g., phone-based, cable-based, satellite-based etc.)

Folks, this forum is absolutely invaluable, and I really cannot get over how really helpful everyone is. Thank you!

Living in Gurgaon, working in Oklha

Dear All:

I will be working in the Oklha industrial estate. We are thinking of living in Gurgaon, mainly because it seems that the accomodations in Gurgaon are larger, newer, and comparatively cheaper than central Delhi.

Question: Can anyone give us a general sense of how long the rush hour commute in a private car would be (both in the mornings and in the evenings?)

An hour or less each way would be fine (call me crazy)....too much beyond that might make it unworkable.

We were in Delhi in the summer and got several differing answers, so any thoughts that you might have would be MOST welcome.

Many thanks,

Hey
I have a friend, who's 25, and has been offered to work as an editor for a company in Okhla Phase I, Delhi.

The thing is, she doubts how much of an offer to put. She says that they mentioned that she wont be getting salaries like the US. So the prior dilemma is, how much should she ask as an offer?

Initially, she thought Rs. 1.5 lakhs. I thought that was too high for a 25 year old, so I told her to get it down to Rs. 1 lakh, but before confirming, I just want to know what IM thinks.

Thanks!
