We will arrive in Mett by way of the Blue Mtn train on a Sunday evening in Feb. We would like to go to Kochi, but am having trouble figuring out the simplest and most direct method. Is there an overnight train from Mett to Kochi? Or should we stay overnight in Mett and then take a bus the following day? What is the approx travel time? (And the best online route to make the reservations please.) Thanks!

Hi,

I have always dreamed of going to India and have now booked to go in the new year with my wife and 4 year old son. I'm leaving UK on 30th December and return on the 17th January.

I'm flying to Bangalore, then want to travel down and explore Kerala, and I'd really appreciate any help and advice on an itinerary.

Things I really want to do are relax on some beaches for maybe a week. Varkala looks lovely, and I've seen there are lovely beaches at Cochin?. I also want to spend a night on a houseboat as this looks unmissable.

My 4 year old son would certainly love to go and see some elephants (he has been on an elephant in Thailand and would surely love to do it again) and maybe tigers if possible?

We would need to be back in Bangalore by the 16th to fly home. Also, any explanations of how we would need to travel inbetween areas would be really helpful. When I travel alone I'm happy to to plan as I go, but with a 4 year old it's always prudent to plan in advance..

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello everyone,

I'm heading to Mumbai at the beginning of December for 7 weeks. Lonely Planet has some good suggestions of places to see and things to do, but I want to get off the beaten track as well. I'm sure I'll work out a lot as I go, but has anyone got any stories or tips they'd like to share with me?

My 'plan' (which is a loose term!), based on Lonely Planet, is to fly into Mumbai, and travel by train to Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and return to Mumbai via Hampi and Pune.

I'm looking to escape the beaten track every so often. I'm not that keen on beaches, but LP assures me that Goa isn't all about tourist swamped beaches. I like hills! I want to experience some of the craziness of Indian cities, but I'm really looking forward to chilling out in beautiful places.

Has anyone got stuff to recommend, the kind of things you don't find in a guidebook? I really want to travel without relying on a guidebook.

I've been to northern India a couple of times, but I can imagine southern can be very different.

Also, can anyone recommend a cheap hotel in Mumbai that isn't in LP? I'm sure there must be much better deals to be had in places not recommended, but I arrive quite late at night, and want to work out where I'm sleeping in advance.

Thank you very much,
Clo

Has anyone got stuff to recommend, the kind of things you don't find in a guidebook? I really want to travel without relying on a guidebook.

I've been to northern India a couple of times, but I can imagine southern can be very different.

Also, can anyone recommend a cheap hotel in Mumbai that isn't in LP? I'm sure there must be much better deals to be had in places not recommended, but I arrive quite late at night, and want to work out where I'm sleeping in advance.

Thank you very much,

Squeeze in Mussoorie or more time in Rishikesh?

Hi all,

I will be doing a one week yoga/meditation course in the Phool Chatti Ashram in Rishikesh in December. Before it starts I could either spend an extra day in Rishikesh or I could make a day trip to Mussoorie from Dehra Dun (as I will take the train from Delhi to Dehra Dun) and make a walk to some viewpoints. After the course I’m heading to Amritsar for 2 days before returning to Delhi, so there won’t be time to visit Mussoorie afterwards.

After reading information (LP, internet) on Mussoorie, I still don't know what to expect of it (I understand it was used to be great, but how is it these days?). Therefore, I was hoping you could help me with the following questions:
1. Is Mussoorie worth squeezing in or does it not add much to the environment of Rishikesh, and why?
2. In Mussoorie, which walking trail would you recommend (not to heavy and safe for female travelling alone)?
3. Are there usually good views in Mussoorie in December or are the clouds to thick?
4. Are there other sights/activities I should really not miss out on when visiting Mussoorie?

Thanks in advance for your help!
