We're going to India for the first time over Christmas. A week in Delhi, then we want to go to Agra and then Jaipur before flying back to Delhi. The guidebooks seem to say that Agra is very polluted and noisy etc and we've been a bit put off staying there. (We are middle-aged and not as tough as you guys!) Is staying at Bharatpur a better option?

We're assuming we get there by train (avoiding scams, we hope!) and then do another stop somewhere from Agra to Jaipur. Any advice on that one?

I've been searching the message boards and haven't come across a situation similar to mine so I think it's a unique dilemma, but forgive me if it's already been covered somewhere!

The dilemma is this - the wife and I are hoping to visit the Taj but we're only in Delhi for one day, and we arrive long after all the trains and day trips have headed off to Agra. We're arriving in Delhi (from Goa) around 10 in the morning on Dec 13, then we fly out to Kolkata early on the 14th morning.

I'm trying to figure out a way to still make the trip as my wife has never been to the Taj and I've only been when I was much younger. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make this happen? Right now I'm leaning towards taking a 11:40 flight to Agra, then since there's no return flight that would work for us, taking the Shatabdi Express back to Delhi that night. Would that be our best bet?

We wouldn't mind getting back to Delhi a little earlier than the Shatabdi's 22:30 arrival time, but it seems like from what I've read on these forums that that train is one of the only ones that can be counted on to regularly run on schedule. Is there another reliable train that heads back to Delhi a little earlier? I saw the Punjab Mail leaves at 17:55 and gets in at 21:15. Does anyone know if that train is on time usually?

We're also debating hiring a car for the trip. Is hiring a car for a day trip that late in the day (leaving for Agra no earlier than 11 in the morning, most likely) a bad idea? Just worried about driving back at night mostly.

Anyway, just wanted to get some input and suggestions before we went ahead and booked anything. I am spending 2 days & 1 night in Agra.

I plan on seeing the Taj at sunset & sunrise & visit the AGra fort.

I am unsure what to do after I have been up to see the Taj at sunrise. It has been suggested that I visit Keoladeo Ghana National Park, Deeg Palace or Mathura & Vrindavan.

I understand that there is not much water or wildlife at Keoladeo, so I do not think that will be enjoyable.

What do you guys think? any other suggestions would be wonderful.
