So I have brought some dried snack foods for my dogs in checked luggage before.

What I am not sure about is if you can bring a big bag of dried pet food (not snacks) in your carry-on luggage (since quality pet food is not available in India after the pet food import ban on some brands)? I know the arrival record asks you to fill if you're bringing any meat, dairy, or plant items along with, but is there any duty charged if you do bring these items along?

P.S.: Once I had a dog at the airport sniff my legs for like five minutes at the departure gate, and I did not even have any pet food then, lol! I love the dogs at the airports!

Hello,

I will be visiting India (Rajasthan, then Goa) for the first time in March/April, travelling with my two little daughters. I have read up a bit, and I guess I have a general idea of what not to do, but I still do have some questions...

I will probably pack a couple of largeish light pants, with some tunics, a light sweater or cardi and some shawls, and then stock up on something in the general SK style. I wear pants+dress and shawls at a daily basis, so don't think I will feel disguised. BUT...!

1) I LOVE whites and beiges and hardly wear anything but neutrals, especially in summer. I gather white is a widows colour in India, and wonder if it will be considered weird or wrong to wear neutrals.

2) We will spend some time riding (both Horse and Camel). What to wear? Jodhpurs in Jodhpur? Jeans? Sweaters or shirts?(We will probably have to fly in in some warm clothes anyway, coming from chilly Norway). For shoes, low riding boots will be ok I suppose - but I find that they still will take up rather too much place, And wonder if I will be able to buy some in Jodhpur (You would think so!) - At what kind of price? Please dont tell me that I can ride in "anything", I'm not a fan of chafed and blistered thighs.

3) Arriving in Delhi, we will stay for two nights in Karol Bagh, so close to shops. Will it be worth it trying to get stitched up some tailored clothes in one day - or best to go with ready mades?

4) I guess little girls of 8 and 10 can wear more or less what they want. Still, They prefer dresses to pant&tunics combo, what about covering up in temples? Concerning bathing - in pools, and beach at Goa - will it be better to bring shorts and t-shirt than bikinis?

5) And finally! Shoes. What kind would be most practical, stylish and comfortable? Please don't suggest trekking sandals. I hate them hate them hate them. Is simple leather sandals "safe" enough? (Will travel with chauffeur so no actual trekking on foot, only monument and city leisure walking) Saw someone advising light mountain boots, but I'm not sure that I could actually support them. Also, with a dress or SK...Well, it's just plain stupid, no?

Hoping to get things a little clearer in my head[happy] I know I have a great deal of time for planning - and I love it! (You won't be rid of me yet...) Thanks in advance!

Hi, Just realised that we will be arriving in Delhi on the day of Holi. Would it be advisable to take some old clothes? Do tourists usually get targeted? It wouldn't bother me if they were I just want to be prepared. I read somewhere about protecting the skin with coconut oil. What would be an English alternative I could bring with me? Lastly if Holi is so popular does that mean that shops & attractions will be closed? Thanks.Francesca

I'm going on a trip to India for 4 months. I will be spending all of my time within a reasonable distance of a city. I've seen a lot of websites extol the virtues of packing light, but I have doubts about whether or not I want to ditch the larger bag completely. I guess I feel like I have two options:

Option 1:
Take one larger-ish carry-on for the majority of my things and one backpack/totebag.

Option 2:
Take one big duffle bag which I'll check, and still take the backpack/totebag as a carry-on.

I'm leaning towards the second, especially because I've seen a few places where the duffle converts into a backpack. But I thought I'd ask potentially more experienced travelers first. Thoughts?

Hi everyone,

I pulled out my backpack today and starting to get organised as I leave next week, so excited!

I intend to purchase some salwar kameez in Jaipur (i arrive on 2nd day). In the meantime would these items of clothing be appropriate to wear ?
* 3/4 pants
* trouser/cargo pants
* 3/4 length long skirt

Also are tshirts considered ok? Or do I need to completely cover up? I want to be respectful of cultures and in no way attract negative attention to myself so I thought I would ask the experts.

I arrive in Delhi @ 2am, I pretty much have a short sleep and onto Jaipur, so no time for shopping in Delhi.

Is the weather still warmish in November? I understand in Mcleod Ganj it will be cooler and I will pick up extra clothing there if necessary.

Many thanks in advance

Sarah :)

Hi, we'll be travelling to India for 3-4months, mid Feb to June...starting from coastal south, some inland, and up West coast to North, including Hamachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand as well...For up north in May and June (Hamachal pradesh, Uttarakhand), and inland areas in South, would very light summer clothes be ok - or to pack some warm clothes for day or night time as well?
It seems like weather at this time is too hot for even jeans? is that so?
thanks:)

Hi everyone,
I'll be visiting India in December, flying into Mumbai, I'll be touring various warm places before ending up and flying out of Delhi. I'm travelling with kids and thus have a lot of stuff to carry, and while my international allowance is large, some of my internal flights have a 20kg per bag limitation. I'm thinking that maybe I can put all of our colder weather clothing in one bag and have it shipped from our transit hotel in Mumbai to our final destination (a relative's house) in Delhi, so we don't have to carry it on our various internal flights (allowing me to lighten the bags we do carry).
Can you advise me on the best way to get a suitcase from a hotel in Mumbai to a house in Delhi? Are there reliable couriers that would pick up from the hotel and not require any special packaging?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I will be travelling around India for 2 weeks in November and I am only taking one carry on backpack.

I love shoes but sadly I am thinking of taking my teva sandals as my only footwear. Would this be adequate? I also may do the day trek to Triund.

I am packing light but running out of space already and dont want to take up room with extra footwear. Not quite sure where all my shopping will go :D

Thanks in advance for any advice!
