*The Sky Below* (http://www.theskybelow.com/reactionsacclaim.php)

"To create the documentary THE SKY BELOW, Sarah Singh traveled solo--without a crew-- across one of the world’s most volatile regions tracing culture, history, society and the politics of divide and rule.

THE SKY BELOW is a contemporary exploration of the creation of Pakistan and the 1947 Partition of the Indian Subcontinent, weaving together 5000 years of culture, while investigating the lingering after-effects of this six-decade old political divide, most tragically witnessed by Kashmir. With her life in the hands of strangers and sometimes gunmen, Singh traveled from the desert of Kutch to the snowy mountains of Kashmir; and from the seaside city of Karachi to the spare but volatile terrain of the Khyber Pass."

http://www.iaac.us/MIAAC2009/

One of the best Indian film festivals in the world, the Mahindria Indo-American Arts Council Festival, will take place in NYC Nov 11-15. I always find it reliably well-curated, so that when I go to movies I don't know anything about I'm pretty much always engaged and pleased.

There are still tickets to everything - the few sold out things aren't the only screenings of the respective movies.

Other well-known participants include Manisha Koirola, Shyam Benegal, Javed Akhtar, Mira Nair, Anurag Kashyup, and Aparna Sen. If you're interested also take a look at the panel discussions running alongside the festival at NYU.

Can recommend a few I've seen - *Fakir of Venice*, with Farhan Akhtar, is a comedy with a dark core about people exploiting each other, with the climax at the Venice Biennale

the *Air India *documentary (with a bit of re-creating) is really eye-opening about the bomb-caused crash of an Air India flight

*Welcome to Sajjanpur* -- village life, directed by S Benegal

*Zanjeer * one of the iconic movies of Amitabh Bachchan in the angry young man phase of his career in the 70s, and considered important I think thematically re: the country at that time - I've never seen it and look forward to this rare opportunity to see it on a big screen with Javed Akktar, who wrote it, there to talk about it.

And then in my experience, the documentaries and non-Hindi parts of the program always yield wonderful surprises for me, things you just aren't likely to run into elsewhere.

Bollywood/Kollywood for Westerners?

I am about to embark on a trip which will lead me to Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Goa and Mumbai, and I thought it might be interesting to watch both a Kollywood and a Bollywood flick before departing.

I think this could be interesting and useful on many levels. At worst, it will give me an idea of what people talk about when they cite Indian cinema. At best, I might chance upon a huge artistic treasure trove that could delight me for years to come.

But approaching Indian cinema is really hard. I searched the web for a while, but just came away more confused, as all the resources I could find are clearly geared towards people who already know what is being discussed.

I have seen some YouTube clips, but taken out of context they didn't help me at all. In fact, judging from the clips alone, I would think that it's all a very cheesy affair, as if Indian movies were but over-the-top parodies of Broadway comedies. I am sure that this is not the case, and that there are bound to be some movies I would appreciate (if only I knew where to find them).

I suspect that on this site there are many Westerners who have experienced (and perhaps even learned to love?) Indian cinema, and I am hoping that somebody could suggest a good Tamil as well as a good Hindi 'beginner' movie for me to watch.

So please, tell me where I should start my cinematic journey from.

An office colleague's grandmother went this way, quietly going into the night by refusing food for 3 days. They were Jains.

A long time ago, when I was in the London Museum looking at the India section, I came across the frieze that showed the different stages of Buddha's enlightenment. One of his experiments was fasting to get enlightenment. The stone frieze showed his emaciated face, the hollowed out cheeks, the prominent spider thread of veins across his face.

I stared and stared and then started crying.

I got a latest issue of Lonely Planet INDIA; must say it is a must have for Backpacking in India. Its 13th Edition / September 2009 issue.

It has also come up with a 5th Edition of Lonely Planet SOUTH INDIA as well

I guess the latest edition is still not easily available in the market; they say 12th Edition is the latest; so beware.

I got one on Ebay.in
