Gandhinagar jpr station to Ahmedabad airport itinerary help

Hi all

I will be arriving in Gandhinagar jpr train station the 2nd of December from Jaisalmer at 5:00 am, since that is a 12 hour trip I assume that I will get to the station around 7 or 8 am due to train delays.

My flight to Goa departs at 12:00 pm. Does anybody know whats the best way to get to Ahmedabad airport, I should think probably taking an auto rickshaw is the best option. I believe that the distance between both places is about 20-25 km, so how much do you think I will have to pay for the journey?

thanks in advance

It was in July that I came back from Gujarat but have been busy studying...I took my 8 yr old and 14 mth old. My 6th trip, 4th and 1st respectively...I must say I was not impressed!Ahmedabad was Ok - found a nice Hotel (Mehul) but disappointment awaited (often the case in Gujarat). We took a rickshaw to the calico museum but it was closed so went again the next day. We actually walked the whole way but went we got there - entry was refused for the children (handy if they'd told me that the day before!)So I left them in the foyer and had a quick look ..As we were leaving I politely asked if we could walk through the gardens because there were peacocks, tortoises ... but again was told children were not allowed!I was very upset.
Pavagadh was uninteresting.
Bhavnagar was ok but nothing interesting to see. We thought we could do a day trip to Palitana and Shatrunjaya but unfortunately arrived too late, not realising how far the hill was from the town centre. We tried to climb the hill but it was extremely hot and we had to turn back. I'd suggest to others to get there the night before...Junagadh sounds wonderful but is in fact noisy and polluted, there was no food available at Relief Hotel and 1 could find only 1 veg restaurant quite a long walk away. However the fort area was very nice and there are some nice old buildings dotted about. Against my better judgment we went to Diu but it was actually nice and restful (clean air too).. Then went on to Bhuj - arrived early and pleasantly surprised by friendly people. The market area had some wonderful embroidery and antiquey things to buy. Gangaram guesthouse was wonderful. I liked Bhuj but there was little to see apart from the remnants left of the old city. We did a day rickshaw trip of some outlying villages but they were not terribly exciting. I'm guessing it would be better to go much further out.. We were going to stay in Ajmer for a couple of nights but I pulled the pin and opted for the soft option of Pushkar where I was able to reward the offspring with a hotel plus swimming pool at rock bottom prices. Also stayed with Indian friends in Jodhpur prior to going down to Ahmedabad and starting our Gujarat trip. In Jodhpur my friend organised a driver at local prices and we drove from Jodhpur to Ahmedabad stopping to see Kumbulgarh and staying overnight at Udaipur which was extremely expensive (and I have stayed there many times). In retrospect as the drive from Udaipur to Ahmedabad was very dull I would not have paid for a car/driver for this section of the trip. It was my first and last experience of travelling this way.We also stayed at Jambughoda Palace near Champaner which was pleasant (nice food) but vastly overpriced. We were the only guests. LP describes thus - ...turned sanctuary in in 1992, encompassing 130km of lush countryside.. In fact the Hotel is not in the sanctuary which was a disappointment to me.

Eating in Dwarka, Jamnagar and Ahmedebad

I have the following info gleamed from my LP book (no I dont trust anything they say any more either) and tripadvisor and elsewhere. If you've eaten a good meal in any these places, please let me know.

Dwarka - Kant Restaurant
Jamnagar - Hotel Swati, Madras Hotel and 7 seas restaurant
Ahmedabad - Bawarchi on Gandhi road

Jamnagar could be a problem finding advice, but loads of people have been to Dwarka, someone must have a recommendation, and Ahmedabad is massive, there's got to be some quality nosh worth recommending there. Ideally I need the ahmedabad one to be near the station, certainly not over the river, where I take it most of the really nice places are. but we may try and get them to bring the food to us if they are on the other side of town but are just too good to miss out on.

Thanks

Day 1 - Leave Ahmedabad early morning by car.Reach Dwaraka by 2 pm..proceed directly to Beyt Dwaraka..visit Nageshwar enroute..visit beyt dwaraka temple..and back to Dwaraka..Visit Dwarakadeesh temple for aarati..stay at Dwaraka.

Day 2 - After morning darshan at temple..proceed for Somnath..visit Porbandhar Gandhiji's house enroute..Reach Somnath by late afternoon..darshan and stay at Somnath.

Day 3 - After morning darshan at Somnath..Visit the temple where Lord krishna left his mortal body forgot the name)and then back to Ahmedabad via Junagadh..Rajkot..

So my question is - In addition to the above itinary are there any places to be seen enroute? Like how is Rajkot , Jamnagar , Junagadh , Veraval..are there anything to be seen here..or for that matter..any other places in Saurashtra which is worth seeing ..and falling enroute without too much of a detour.

By places which i wish to see..I mean places which have historical, spiritual, religious or just an offbeat tourist place

5+ Weeks in Gujarat...Where to Go?

My wife and I are going to India (3rd time) and want to go to Gujarat (1st time). I wanted to see Gujarat on both my previous trips but ended up going elswhere. This time we are going for sure. We have booked a train to Ahmedabad and arrive on the morning of December 7th.

So we will start in A'bad and would like to end in A'bad in mid January for the kite festival (unless there is a better place to enjoy this festival?). So we have just over 5 weeks.

We are looking for help for a general logical itinerary that would minimize travelling (backtracking). We like places that have a friendly feel to them...we love meeting people. We like small rural places but also like towns and cities. We would like to experience a variety of things. We don't mind staying in simple basic accomodations.

From A'bad we would like to visit 'Little Rann' sanctuary to see the khurs (wild ass) and salt farms. How and from where is it best to this? From Zainabad, Dhrangadhra or elsewhere? Book ahead? Is Patan and Modhera worth a visit? Is Modhera a town or just a site? Any place to stay? Unclear in my guidebook.

If going to Patan maybe best from |A'bad then on to Little Rann to avoid backtracking??

Then we like to make our way to Bhuj and spend some time there visiting traditionnal villages. Which ones do you recommend? (would prefer not going to the ones where people just see tourists as a money bag...if any of the villages have become this way.) Also plan on going to Mandvi.

From Bhuj would like to go to Junagadh...any recommended stop(S) along the way to break the journey?

Dwarka seems interesting...is it worth the long hawl to this end of the state? Any other places of interest around there?

From Junagadh we would like to go to Diu. From there to Palitana and then on to Bhavnagar and maybe Alang (possible to visit shipbreaking yard?)

From Bhavnagar would like to head back to A'bad for kite festival from where we'll be heading south to Mumbai then south India.

So what do you think? Any not mentionned places that I should not miss. I would also love to visit and stay (a night or two) in a small fishing village (town)...Any recommendations?

I have read many threads on this site and let me tell you that it's a world of help. Thanks to all who participate.

All opinions welcomed!

National Highway 59 - crazy for a cyclist?

Hi!

I am a Swedish cyclist. I went from Sweden through Europe, Turkey, Iran and Dubai. After a flight and train trip from Mumbai I have now reached Dwarka in Gujarat. From here I will cross India all the way to the border of Bangladesh.

I am route planning and from Dwarka I will first go to Ahmedabad. From there, the best for me would be to go from Ahmedabad to Indore on the National Highway 59. I just wonder if anyone has any experience of this highway? Would it be very dangerous for me. If so, what could be an alternative route?

I would be so thankful for all tips.

Thanks in advance,
Viktor
