We are 8 of us, planning tour to Ladakh next year, in our own vehicles (I am based in Mumbai), to Ladakh. I have been to Ladakh before (2000), but a lot has changed since then, and will be more than obliged for all your tips and suggestions.

1. Time of year. I plan to go in September 2010. The reason is rains should be lesser. (Rains will be more in July Aug, especially while travelling to Manali). Earlier, the road (Manali Leh Highway), used to open only by mid june or so. How early, on an average, does it open now. I mean, will it be possible to go in end May or early June. Which season is the best, you feel? considering my travel by road.

2. As for Manali Leh Highway, I plan to take two breaks (The very idea of own vehicle is to enjoy every metre this beautiful road). First at Jispa or Keylong. Second would logically come at Pang. Somehow I dont like to stay at Pang. Sarchu is too far close to Jispa. Is there any other place than Pang, where we can stay, for a second halt?

3. I am prepared for the fact that the road is not likely to be in a good condition by September. But significant lengths of the MLH (Manali Leh Highway), are usually OK, especially the plains and hopefully, I will come back with my car in one piece. (We planning to take one Toyota Innova, and one Toyota Qualis, both two wheel drives).

4. Except for some permits in Ladakh, are any permits needed to travel MLH, is any clearance needed anywhere?

5. Within Ladakh, I plan to travel to Nubra in my own vehicle. For Pangong, we will hire some other local vehicle. For Tso moriri, I am not sure about present road conditions. There was a suggestion, that while going on MLH, I can take a turn at Debring, go to Tso Moriri, and then come via Mahe bridge road. The only reason I do not want to do this, is I do not want to miss Tanglang La. Any suggestions for this. It's more likely, that we will hire a local vehicle to Tso Moriri also.

6. How is the road upto kargil. We plan to visit Suru Valley also. Beyond, as of now, there is no plan to come back via Srinagar, but keeping that plan open. Suggestions welcome. How are the roads to Srinagar, and thence to Jammu.

7. Can you suggest me decent places to stay in Leh. I am not looking for any high end hotel. Just some good place which can provide four walls, a good bed to sleep, and most importantly for me, I can keep my vehicle there safely. Of course, I can search there when I reach there, but if there is one already in my mind, I can save time and if someone has already been there and liked it, it can be an assurance for me.

8. For a proper planning, I am looking to some native of Leh (or Nubra) whom I can directly contact on phone / email and gain idea about present conditions. I will be most obliged, if I can get some good knowledgeable contact in Leh and in Manali, as that will make planning easier for me.

Finally, if there's anyone reading this post, who has taken his/her own vehicle, from Mumbai, to Leh, I would be happy, if you give me suggestions on stops. We plan to reach Chandigarh in two days.

I am sorry my questions are too exhaustive, but am really looking forward to suggestions and tips on this wonderful forum.
