1 Month stay - Apartment?

Hello,

Basically, I just need a place to sleep and wash for a month...I'm not sure what the best option would be. I would prefer something cheap, safe and near Belur Math. Would there be something? Thanks!

Hello! I am about to fly to India and I must say I am very nervous. I've been obtaining every piece of information about the country since I got accepted to ATI's tesol program in July, but I still have some questions. I'll be staying for 4 months and I need to know what to bring with, and what not to bring with.

I've checked out some living cost charts but they're always very different and a lot of things are missing. I'm aware I have to bring some extra deoderant, and well... some tampons were advised, a nail brush and some hand sanitizer... I'm also looking to find a voltage/plug adapter (do I need both, or are they techinically the same thing?) but I'm not sure which voltage is required. I'm from Canada, so if you are too maybe you can give me some hints!!!

Also, my accomodation is already arranged at the school for the first month, and I'm garaunteed a teaching job and accomodation for the next 2-3 months, so with this taken into account how much money should I bring along in Canadian or U.S. dollars, or should I just get travellers cheques?

Also, I will be travelling from Kolkata to Kerala for my teaching internship, and I'm having a lot of trouble trying to figure out the price of a train ticket, and how I should go about booking it, and if perhaps an indrail pass would be a good idea...

So many questions I know, but It's my first international trip and I'm so nervous and excited I could scream!

I'm also always wondering where the best places to visit are in India. I really want to see Darjeeling, and well Kerala, but I'm not really too sure about what else. Suggestions would be a godsend!

All your help is greatly appreciated.

Bank Guest House in Kolkata

Hi,

I'm traveling to Kolkata and a friend of mine who works for a bank (maybe UCO bank but I'm not sure) said he can arrange accomodation for me in the guest house of his bank. I've never been to Kolkata and I don't have any experience with such guest houses and I'm a little apprehensive. Can anyone with experience with such guest houses comment?

My grandfather was stationed in Calcutta during WWII, and he took photos of his favorite locations while he was there. I'll be headed to Kolkata at the end of the month and would like to try to photograph some of the things he saw.

I know that Firpo's burned down and was never rebuilt. I don't know anything about what happened to the Burra Club, but I assume that it also no longer exists. Does anyone know where these buildings used to stand and what is there now?

I was looking for a hotel which has no problem with indian boy+ foreigner girl living in the rooms. Room rate Any ideas guys? Banking in Kolkata

Hello everyone,

So I just moved to Kolkata and am really enjoying it so far! These forums have been an enormous help.

One thing I did not anticipate was foreign transaction fees on my ATM card. I will be living in Kolkata for at least 9 months, maybe longer, and the 2% fee my bank charges on every ATM withdrawl is starting to add up.

Can anyone recommend a local or international bank that I might open an account with? I am an American, living in Salt Lake (near City Centre), on a research visa. Hopefully they would have online banking so I could link it up to my American bank account, and transfer funds that way.

a week from Kolkata to Dubai from 1st week of December 2009,
so far this the largest number of flights by any airlines from
Kolkata. There will be daily two flight to Dubai and only one
in weekends, with their large network it will be convenient to
fly in/out of Kolkata to large number of International destinations.

Musical Instruments (harmonium) in Kolkata

Hello all,
I am a Tabla player and will be in Kolkata for a few days early December. A friend in Australia wants me to buy and send him a Harmonium.

From my research so far Kolkata seems to be a good place to buy musical instruments.

We are after a very small traveller type Harmonium like a Dulcetina. Name brands are not important but quality is.

I have read elsewhere that it is often better to find a small craftsman to get better quality for the best price.

Could anyone please advise if they are aware of any quality Harmonium makers in Kolkata?
