Mail-order medications feasible from UK pharmacy?

Dear India health gurus -

Is it feasible to have meds shipped mail-order from UK pharmacies to India?

We'd like to take the Paludrine/Avloclor combination as an anti-malarial during our several-month India trip. Unfortunately, these aren't available here in the US, and the Canadian pharmacies want a prescription from our US doctor - who won't write us a prescription for a drug unapproved in the US. (Besides, I haven't been able to find the handy Paludrine/Avloclor travel pack available from the Canadians.)

Several online UK pharmacies (including Brennans (http://www.brennanspharmacy.co.uk/)) say they will gladly ship overseas to India and don't need a prescription for this drug combo.

But what's the chance that a brown-paper-wrapped shipment of anti-malarial medications will make it successfully from the UK through the international post and Indian customs? Would I maximize my chance of success by having it posted to a hotel/guesthouse/private home rather than the GPO?

Anybody pulled off this kind of thing before?

Thanks,
Steve

I feel really uneasy as the mgr of my guesthouse in Udaipur has started offering to buy me "gifts" mainly silver and stone jewelry, he wants me to go with him to a jewelry market tomorrow afternoon to choose my gifts

Is this appropriate behaviour? It feels wrong.
He has told me he will be very offended if I refuse.
I don't want to offend him but also how do I make it clear that I am in NO way able to repay something like this either with money or any other kind of favour!?

I do not think I've done anything inappropriate. I haven't tried to be overly familiar.

What should I do?

Hello,

My husband and I will be travelling to India in two weeks, and while there I'd really like to get a henna tattoo. Are henna artists usually easy to find? We'll be in Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Varanasi, Khajuraho, and Sawai Madhopur. Can anyone recommend the best place to find someone willing to "ink up" a Westerner? Also, can henna designs be applied to the top of the hand/wrist, rather than the palms? How long do they usually last?

A friend of mine is a tattoo artist just getting into henna tattoos, and she's very excited about what I might bring back/learn about it while there. (She's already warned me to stay away from the black henna.)

Any info would be appreciated.

how do I dial from a PCO (assuming there is one at station?)

I have a 12 digit number for them beginning with 91 which I think is the India country code?
then it reads 94-1381-2436 do I drop the 94 and just call the last 8 digits?

help! thanks

There are secular and religious institutions that will offer these patients a bed but often they are crowded, even claustrophobic, as one patient put it. Sometimes, they are far away and a patient may be too weak to make the trek to and from his home. And anyway, when 43,000 new patients arrive every year, some are going to end up on the street, especially since 70 per cent are treated free of charge.

But while they are here, they are a community that shares an enemy: cancer. They battle the rain and the flies. They learn to live with the cacophony of the city’s traffic and the way pedestrians may intrude upon their space at will. They bathe. They eat. They find time to play, laugh, gossip and grumble. They look out for each other and guard each other’s belongings. They forge a community and refuse to admit defeat.
Chemical fogging in Gaya, Bihar for Japanese Encephalitis

Hey folks,

I'm planning to be in Bodh Gaya in late December for about 2-3 weeks. Just saw this article about the outbreak of JE in that region, and the subsequent fogging in attempts to combat the infected mosquitos. Chemical exposure-wise, it should be fairly safe by then right? I'm also getting the Japanese Encephalitis vaccine, but my two friends who will be there with me aren't getting it.

I'm considering not going at all and convincing my friends to do the same...but we're all looking very much forward to seeing HH Karmapa there and that's why the choice is very difficult to make.

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!

From The India Times, October 29 2009:

PATNA: At least 30 people have died and about 105 persons affected by Japanese Encephalitis in Bihar, prompting the state health authorities to
order chemical fogging in the affected areas of Gaya and Munger districts.

State health department sources confirmed 30 deaths due to the disease and claimed that around 105 others were affected in Gaya and other districts because of the spread of the disease.

"We are sending doctors to the affected areas and intensifying the technical malathion (chemical fogging) to destroy the causative mosquitoes of Japanese Encephalitis," a source said.

Identifying pigs and water birds for the growth of mosquitoes, the health department had also approached the animal resources department to keep pigs away from human habitation, sources said.

Special vaccination drive would be undertaken to contain the disease, besides routine immunisation in the districts, they said.

According to official figures, three children died and altogether 21 Japanese encephalitis cases were reported in 2006, while the death toll rose to 164 in 2007, during which 336 cases were reported.

Similarly in 2008, 46 children died of the disease and 198 were affected.

Hey folks, I'm brand new on here, thanks in advance for reading! I'm arriving in Delhi December 6th and hoping to find a couple Epipens when I get there. I need new ones and they're so freakin expensive here! Has anyone seen them at pharmacies around Delhi? (Also hoping to find some Doxycycline, which I hear is pretty available).

Cheers!

I am travelling to Kerala in March/April with my two kids. I have backpacked quite alot before including through India and have never bothered about anything but Hep A. (I had a bad experience on Larium years ago.) This is the first time my kids will have been to India and I was planning on the usual deet and nets and I am about to get both kids a booster for Hep A. What is the prevalence of Mozzies this time of year in Southern India?? Perhaps I should give them malaria pills but what if they react to the tablets like I did...I thought I was going crazy!!
