tripods in India?

I will be going to India soon, and I am into photography and will be taking lots of shots. I would like to bring a tripod for some night shots or long exposures, but I am not sure if the tripod will be a problem.

Are they allowed in most sites? Even if they are not allowed, what if it I put it on the outside strap of my backpack...will the mere presence (not use) be a problem? Depending on my schedule, I might not be able to drop the tripod off at a hotel, so I will probably be carrying it on the side of my backpack the entire time...

Any help here is most apprecaited!

 Last minute frantically researching what is all-round best way to store and share non-HD video with friend in Europe. A consideration is he is not poor and could be able to finance some sort of online storage service. But I have to at least have a hard backup.

I am just getting back into video after a six year hiatus and am waaaay out-of-date. Just discovered mini-Dv tapes are no longer used. :dontgetit I'm a bit of a moron when it comes to technology so being user friendly is more important than features. The idea is to save weight and potential loss. DVD burner? Upload to a free/paid site? Carry an external hard drive? But the durable ones intended for upcountry journeys are rather bulky. Leave in home base and load with much more portable memory cards? Like everything there is compromises of low cost, portability, ease of use and reliability.

I was thinking sample shots via youtube (I have a low-end camcorder that has built-in software)but some way to keep for three months(and maybe send) useable 'footage' for his art project is just as important.

I see this Samsung camcorder has a program on CD called 'mediashow' which I transfered to a card reader, but I am spoiled by imovie. I will be travelling WITHOUT my Mac, without any laptop in fact. The goal is to use internet cafes.

I expect to be in traveller centers every few weeks, but upcountry exploring in between.

hI ALL,

I've just bought a prepaid mobile in Delhi, topped it up with credit etc... I assume the network is Airtel, although Aircel appears on the screen. I can make calls and send texts to home (Ireland) but cannot receive texts or calls which defeats the original purpose.

Can anyone please advise on what the problem may be or steer e in the right direction?

I assume sending a text from Ireland done would dial 0091 following by th emobile number.

Many thanks in advance for any advice given :) :)

Hi All,
Does anyone have any up to date info on who offers Wireless Internet in India? What I mean is having an actual USB modem plugged into your laptop and not tapping into WIFI in a cafe etc.

Is Prepaid the best option for a traveler or are their month to month post paid options?

Thanks,
Lara

An employee from our company is going to be traveling to India next month on vacation. He wants to ensure that he is reachable in the case of a work emergency, and we are trying to get advice regarding cell phones and Internet access. He will be in Delhi
and Varanassi. I have looked into renting cell phones, but that seems like an expensive option and people's experiences buying a SIM card in India seem to vary from being very easy to being very difficult. Can anyone offer any advice regarding what they have done for both cell phone and Internet access when they have traveled to India?

Thank you!

Internet Access in Dhawa (Ghazipur)

I will be traveling to India (from uk) towards the end of November in order to help a school in Dhawa (Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh) with their computers.
Whilst I am out there I will need some internet access in order to talk to my family (e-mail/msn).
I cannot find out what sort of mobile coverage is available in Ghazipur so im hoping someone on here can tell me.
Ideally im looking for a Mobile broadband usb dongle + indian SIM card. Ive read that 3G is not so wide spread and should expect a slower GSM connection which should be fine for what I need.
I will be traveling through delhi (1 night) so I could buy anything I need here.
Where should I buy the dongle? Uk? delhi? ghazipur?
Which mobile network would be most appropriate?
What prices can I expect to pay for internet access? (likely 1-2hours per night, 14nights)
What are wireless hotspots like in ghazipur?

On another point.
The school in Dhawa want to attempt to video conference with our pilot school in the uk. At the moment im having trouble getting information from the school so thought it would be best to ask here.
What are broadband connections like in ghazipur?
Is it likely the school will have nothing for internet? Mobile? Wired cable/dsl?
If they have broadband, what sort of speeds is it likely to give?

Thanks in advance

Hi there,

I am going to Goa and was wondering if there is any kind of prepay or pay as you go wireless USB plug in connection that I can just buy when I get to Goa.

I am not the most clued up when it comes to this so can anyone explain what I need to buy, where I can get it from and what is required.

The one I use in the UK is a pay as you go Vodafone USB dial up account. Is there anything similar that I can use in Goa?

Thanks for you help,
