They are not at all popular in India and I am sure 95% of computer 'literate' people would have the same expression "What is Mac ?"...
The only thing I can think of is that Apple makes an expensive computer. Perhaps the pricing is too high and even wealthy Indians find the cost (when you take currency exchange into account) not competitive? The other hurdle for Apple computers in India are that Windows PCs are usually the computer of choice for businesses, and businesspeople are the ones best able to afford computers.

Airtel covers only the main areas as mentioned in their website.

Also airtel offers unlimited download at 1000 rs per month while reliance offers unlimited at 1500rs per month

Recently Tata indicom have launched a USB wireless card for 2850 rs. There is no unlimited download plan, beat that . Also it 1x, CDMA based.

I somehow too feel that airtel is better than reliance however not to forget that we are talking about wireless technology here

Hi Nick
Can you tell me what is the best laptop to purchase.
I only want to send emails and read the news?
Will it be better to purchase in Goa, or take one with me from UK.

Thanks

nick's travelling at the moment - so may be a bit delayed replying to you.

If you're going to be in Goa for any length of time it is probably better to purchase locally so that at least you'll have support there if you need it. Bringing a laptop in from overseas can be fraught with problems if it breaks down as local agents may be unwilling to service it.

In terms of brand/ model? If its just for email and browsing than most of the major brands will handle that easily - just as long as it has a reputation for reliability. The big name brands like HP, Toshiba, etc - are pricey, but solid and reliable. Dell, Acer - may not have all the bells and whistles but tend to be cheaper and are still very solid.

If email and news is all your after - any reason why nicks suggestion of iway wont suffice on its own?

Thanks very much, think will wait until I get over there, Have tried to contact Dell, but they have not replied.

Also heard of both ~FN and locals having problems with the customs in Goa with laptops.

I just want something to contact the children whilst in Goa for 6 months, fed up with Iways. they always wait for me to go in and the "lekkie" goes off.

depending on your budget Dell might be a good compromise (it will certainly do email and browsing no problem). No local support in that if it breaks down it will have to be shipped to someone to repair (this is the service model worldwide) - but if its new then it would be rotten luck if that did happen, and it would be covered by a Dell warranty.

If you only need a basic one maybe this helps:

http://listings.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsocm...sear ch&fgtp=

Got one of those and am happy I paid only about 140 Pounds and don't have to worry so much about my new laptop getting stolen or damaged. Plus the subnotebooks are really lightweight and small...

This looks like a good deal, ready to use (i had to install the Operating system first) and with the hardware you'll definitely be able to mail and surf:
