Wi-fi

Here is a link for wifi in Delhi from PC magazine. None are free and not a lot of cost info but it might be some help.

Oxford bookshop wifi down.
The sweet boys that work there smile and are evasive about just when it will be up again.
Super sweet smiles and nods when I asked "next week?"

its a short form for wireless- fidelity and denotes a wireless network. it can be used for many things like pdas, mobiles but is most commonly used to access the internet.

there is a debate whether it actually stands for wireless fidelity. for more see this

Free WiFi hotspots

Havent tried it myself (old laptop, no WiFi capability) but I think that the waiting area at Chennai Central railway station is WiFi enabled.

Wi-fi Why's

The Oxford Books wi-fi in Delhi never works (not in the week I was there). No projections as to when it might. Funny, the above poster said it wasn't working on 29 April...I was there on 29 May and nothing had changed.

The Barista in Nungambakkam, Chennai was somewhat the same. Though they have signs proudly posted that they are "wireless hotspot" they have been öut of the sign-up materials (you have to fill out some form) for several months. No idea when they'll be getting more. The wi-fi system itself, they claim, works just fine...they just don't have the pieces of paper.

Wi-Fi in India is a lot like the fax machine in McLeod Ganj. Oh yes maam, we do have wi-fi. Oh, sorry maam, we do HAVE it, it's just not working. Yes, it used to work...and it might work sometime in the future...maybe even "tomorrow"....just not today.

Places I have found with working wi-fi:
MADRAS: Amethyst coffee house in Sundar Mahal, Gopalapuram. Warning: it's 100Rs an hour!

The Taj Connemara's is so expensive it's not worth discussing.

RISHIKESH: Red Chili Adventure in Laxman Jhula (20Rs an hour with free tea). Above Red Chili is the Ganga Dham guest house and I imagine if you stay there, you might get it free all day long!
Lucky's Internet in lower Laxman Jhula (30 Rs an hour, A/C!)
The Pilgrim's Guest House in High Bank has it, but for some reason only for its residents (and it's about 800Rs a night minimum)

McLEOD GANJ: Green Hotel (30rs an hour)

KATHMANDU Nepal: New Orleans Cafe in Thamel - update: it used to be free...now it's a charge of 50NRs for the current (however long you stay, 1 hour or all day it's the same) and they only have wifi during the day.

Himalayan Java on Tridevi Marg (30NRS/hour, but they only sell 1 hour at a time so you get cut off and have to keep asking for a new password every hour)

Kathmandu Guest House (60NRs an hour)

Hotel Annapurna on Durbar Marg (the desk guys told me it was free for any registered guest in the hotel. If you're Indian, it' $75 a night; everyone else pays $165.)

Happy Typing.

I guess this information could be very useful and should be readily available. I think I'll make this thread a Sticky.

After all --- being able to log into IndiaMike while in India is pretty important

o.k. jot one more down, Main street in Camp, Pune is Wi-Fi enabled. Actually the whole city is going to be covered soon. On week-ends the hotspot works. There was a free trial sometime back but no idea if it's still on or not but it works. There is the usual form-filling but I know of people who do it as well as people who have had it working without any issues. One does need a valid sign-on

wifi access updates? (esp. darjeeling, sikkim, kolkata)

has anyone found wifi access in west bengal or sikkim in addition to bagdogra airport, siliguri, and the places already listed in this sticky for kolkata? ('m not hopeful, but figured it couldn't hurt to ask. (not that it would kill me to be off the digital grid for a few weeks, of course!)

Varanasi

In the Asi Ghat area . . . not free, but great people run the place . . . ask for directions from Raju @ Tiwari Lodge, Asi, Varanasi. Three minute walk from the Ganges.
