I noticed that the Barista coffee shop next to Stirling Cinema (Murzban Road, Fort, Mumbai) offers wi-fi now. It's 50 rupees to use it, I was told by a staff member. I didn't ask how much time they give you, but one could guess that it's at least an hour. I don't know if the other outlets offer this service or not. It may be something they're doing on a case-by-case basis. They'd tried it in 2002/2003 but there weren't enough laptop owners at the time so the service was discontinued.

The building I'm in has free wireless service because I'm providing it. Drive around Parel until you find "PAREL WIRELESS"

Wi-Fi in and around the hotel but it's certainly not free - RS600 per 24 hours if I remember correctly. Ouch!

the buildings at the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode (Calicut) are also wi fi enabled.

There are several wifi spots around McLeod Ganj, Dharam Shala up in the Himalayas!

We have a very advanced wireless mesh network which is serving as a backbone to offer high speed internet services to the Tibetan Government in Exile offices and other Tibetan institutions and there are also some wifi access points around town. There is one at the green hotel, one at upper TCV school, one in the Chonor Hotel I think.

There is no available cheap bandwidth here though so no way to sell really cheap or free internet access. One poor guy got a bill for 100,000 Rs for a month as he was allowing several institutions to use his BSNL Data One connection which he got charged by the MB for. Internet services as yet through wifi here are more expensive than getting your own DSL line.

They charge Rs.200/- an hour for their Wi-Fi. This is not a typo, they really do charge Rs.200/- an hour!

This is not only greedy, but very bad business.

Anyone can set up an unsecured wireless hotspot to an existing internet connection for Rs.2000/- including the equipment.

If these jokers at the Hotel Marine Plaza had a free Wi-Fi hotspot the news would get around and people would go there to download their email, surf AND BUY SOME DRINKS + FOOD!

As it is, they are earning a reputation for being a greedy rip-off joint that is trying to exploit the businessman and traveller by overcharging for what is increasingly becoming a necessary form of communication.

Shame on them!

The signal strength is very low in the smoking area of the business class lounge, so it would better suit non-smokers or economy class travellers.

BSNL are planning to charge for this in the future. Bad idea! It costs them nothing and is just as much a service for customers as the a/c.
