Where to buy a mini laptop in India

My boyfiend and I are currently travelling around India for a couple months before heading over to Thailand and a few more places, so should be travelling for about a year. We're interested in buying one of the mini laptops (eee pc, dell etc) for our travels.

As we're not at any fixed address, buying over the internet is not really an option. Does anyone have any sugestions as to go to buy one. We're currently in Manalai and heading further north, but will eventually be heading back to Delhi so i'm assuming that would be the best place? Do Eee PC have a shop anywhere?

Any suggestions would be appreciated?

Many Thanks

Yes Nehru place is the right place.
The popular brands are Sony, HP. You may not get all models of Dell readily available, the dealer will get it from Bangalore which may take a few days.
A good mini lap made by Sony(Vaio) costs Rs.150000/-

We only wanted to spend around 15000rupees, we just need a basic one whyile we're travlling for internet use and keeping a dairy of our travels and sorting photos. I know you can get mini ones in the UK for around 150/200punds so was hoping to find a similar price here?

Cheers!

Typically netbooks come in two flavors - Linux & crippled Windows{some micro soft flavor}.
Then to confuse more there are those with solid state drives <16G and ones with traditional >120G.

Lenovo & Asus would be a better deal than DELL or HP. If you want the netbook just for surfing, a linux based might just do the trick

one of the original small asus eeepc and a similar machine from hcl (with the same config but with a hdd instead of a ssd, referred to as a classmate pc) sell for about 9990 in all the larger chains across mumbai and bangalore....

The name that comes to mind immediately is Croma. in a croma store in chennai for 15K you can get a model form HCL that has a 7" swiveling touch screen with that turns in to a tablet pc... again a mini laptop with an atom processor....

They must have targeted their marketing well! They have only existed a few weeks...

I can see it now... the conference room, men in suits and ties, women in err, suits and ties... On the whiteboard: Objective: Jag!

Seriously though, Have you been, and how does it compare with e-zone, the other large electrical stores like Vivek, or the computer-specialist shops like Modern Computers, etc?

err... ahhh... they have existed for over 3 years. I lived in mumbai for over a year and regularly shopped at croma and in bangalore as well....

I actually havent visited any other electronics stores in chennai. All my A/V needs are met via upgrades to my PC which are purchased at ritchie street. And since all my pcs have been self assembled for the last decade i havent checked out stores like modern as well.

Ive only been to the Anna Nagar outlet and the place is cramped compared to the spacious showrooms in mumbai and bangalore. we were only looking for an MP3 player and a specific laptop model for a friend. While they stocked both we found the mp3 player for 500 bucks less at a shop right opposite the croma showroom.

What i remember of mumbai is that the larger chain showrroms offer prices as low as the smaller single stores. infact the smaller stores are hard pressed to match the prices of the larger chains. While in chennai (then and now) you can generally find lower prices in smaller stores where as larger stores charge way higher. CROMA at first glance seems to also suffer with the same affliction here in chennai....

In chennai mostly every thing at home was/is purchased by dad and i am not involved in the decisions. where as in mumbai i had to outfit my flat with everythintg i required and thus gained a lot of experience in shopping for stuff... in mumbai.

Netbooks as envisaged initially were to ship with Windows XP. asus already shipped their eee pc range with a customised linux os. there is no crippled windows it is Windows XP home that ships on the netbooks. once again it is asus that ships ssds (solid state drives) on some models. havent noticed anyone else ship ssds on value models. they may be available on performance models as ssds can pack in a lot more punch than the small hard drive.

I stand corrected, thanks

Are they new to Chennai, then? I got that impression from the advertising, but it also said Tata, so I didn't bother to read on.

The concept of SSD based sub 10", really light device to do email, surf the net, store some music and photos was pioneered by ASUS with EEPC. In this part of the world, a few other manufacturers started with SSDs. I have not looked at the market lately as I am no nolonger in the market for a netbook... for now

Let's put it this way: if I have a choice, I won't buy Tata, but I'm not going to make myself suffer over it
