Western electronics, India compatibility
Hi
I'm moving to India from the UK and will be using my beloved, clanky old ibook G4. Are there any compatibility issues with Indian power supply? Ie will it blow up as soon as I plug it in as a computer did for me in France. (How I laughed!) And will I need a spike or voltage converter as I did in Sri Lanka? Thanks in advance for any replies. And, with the greatest respect, please don't bother posting if it's just to tell me how blindingly easy it would be to get these answers myself! I like asking people questions and prefer their replies to old moth-bitten cobwebby bits of text on the net. Call me old fashioned and all that. ('You're old fashioned' etc) (I think I am a bit, actually.) Cheers Martin |

Well, yes, but... It is all here!
Indian power is unreliable and dirty. Whilst your multi-voltage (110-220) power adapter may soak up a lot of this, it is not what it is meant to do. As you will be resident, and weight is not an issue, buy a UPS. Whilst your laptop's battery will keep you going through short power cuts, it will not power the broadband modem --- and the desk light. Get a UPS that includes Voltage regulation and spike protection. Bring a few 4-way extension leads to plug all your british-plug kit into. You remove the british plug from the 4-ways (or 6-way even!) and put an Indian plug on them. This (even the cheap ones) will be better quality than what you get here --- at least, better than what you get from your local electric shop. |

Thanks, Nick.
I'll follow up that advice and flourish in a non-combustible-laptop nirvana. |

I found the UPS pretty limited. If you're here to stay, your best bet would be an inverter. Buy the best surge protector. Spikes and surges are commonplace.

UPS/Inverter; whatever, it depends on the capacity and your requirements ...and on your definition of limited. I get more than an hour (is the most since it was replaced under warranty, so I can't say) out of my setup, which is plenty for most cuts.
Of course, it is limited in that it doesn't support anything else in the house, but then, to do so, an inverter would have to be sufficiently sized. |
