Weird looking gadget
Sorry if this question sounds a bit paranoid but I'm, er, a bit paranoid. I'm off to India for a while to work on my songwriting. I'm taking one of these with me to record with :
http://www.dv247.com/invt/61412/ Am I likely to get any hassle from officials thinking I'm a journalist?! |

Not if they don't see it. Put it in your checked luggage, and I don't think there is any reason to declare it, is there?
If they do hassle you tell them it's a Taser and lunge at them with it. . . . . . . (do not do this) |

Haha...cheers Hal ;-) I was actually hoping to carry it on my person as it's pocket-sized and doubles as an mp3 player. I suppose I could say it's the largest most advanced mp3 player in the world!

I haven't had customs ask to see my bags when entering India. People travel with iPods, Blackberries, cell phones and all sorts of stuff. I doubt yours will raise any suspicions.

LOL, Ed
![]() Razorpig, I had a look at that thing and like Hal I don't really see why there would be any problem no. Other than people on your way loving to handle and look at it from all angles, presumably. (My camera has an uncovered lens. This turned out to be unhandy in an Indian context. Or rather, it made me happy to have bought a wipe cloth to go with it.) (btw The fun of making audio recordings on the ground too: I have very few that aren't peppered with Hello!? Your good name please? How many Rupees that camera cost? ... Ganja, yes? No, is tembacu only, ganja ney [this is me smoking rolling tobacco, you see]. Abracadabra? Hindi ney, angresi only. Etc. etc. )

Ha ha, I see where you're coming from machadinha ! This thing really is the dog's b*****x for recording on the move, but it's perhaps a bit too good for India. It'll pick up every ambient sound in detail, which could be a happy accident for some tracks! All in all tho, for this trip I'll set my sights on rough DEMOS only....

I can't think of an electronic gadget I have not taken to India and gotten away with it. Mind you I did have to duck customs with the video projector....

Hey abracax, sorry if I'm just being a bit dyslexic here, but are you saying that whenever you've taken electronic stuff, it's got ruined , or it's survived?

unless you are carrying a lot of electronics with you, the customs should not be a problem. Worst case ask them to make an entry in your passport so that they can verify that you are carrying the stuff back.
they will not really bother to do so. |

I usually pre-emptively list the serial numbers of all my gadgets on the last page of my passport, but no-one gives a rat's about gadgets anymore. Especially prominent items (e.g. the aforementioned video projector) that has to be packed in carry-on require special care. Watch for customs/security putting a chalk X on the bag (indicating it should be checked by customs), and if they do find a suitable moment in the hurly-burly of the baggage claim to calmly wipe off the chalk (turn the bag over to hide it on the cart as well). Then stride out of there like you are Vijay Mallya in a hurry.

I was hoping to carry it on the plane with me in a SMALL guitar case, and just checking in my backpack. Is this going to be OK? Guitar's about 36" x 9", one of those backpacker types, but it'll be a bit bigger in the case...
