warranty for laptop good in India?
Hi
Does anyone have any general info/advice about what to look for in a warranty when purchasing a laptop in US that has to serve us in India for the next two years? We are looking at a Dell laptop, perhaps. Will ask Dell what their terms are as well but my experience with these kind of questions in past posed to minimum wage workers is they will just bs because they dont in fact know the answer. Do warranties in general cover life abroad? Is it ok to post in more than one forum with the same question? Wondering if I should put this in expat area as well? Thanx Mridu be there soon - June 26 |

IMHO, warranties are pretty meaningless. You want to go for the most reliable device and then once you purchase it hope for the best. For example, Dell Warranty requires that you ship the PC back to them (yes, you have to pay for shipping). They might have service centers in India, you'll gave to check with them. You might be better off buying a laptop from a manufacturer who has a warranty service center in your city.

First step would be to read the warranty of any laptop you are considering. Some issues, such as the length of warranty, whether it is world-wide coverage, and how you deal with a problem will be covered. Not sure about Dell, but some companies only provide one year's coverage unless you go for the optional extended warranty.
As an example, my Apple laptop has a 1 year, worldwide, limited warranty. This can be extended to 3 years with an optional (AppleCare) policy. With a problem, the first step is usually web or phone support followed by instructions to ship the unit to a service centre if it is hardware related (they send you a shipping box to send it in). Regarding your other question, please do not post duplicate questions/threads in other forums as it just confuses matters....this is the appropriate forum for your inquiry. m2 |

I agree with 2cents. I have a Dell laptop with an international warranty. Its been very worth it. Ive required a technician on three occasions, changing the motherboard, keyboard and something else. You definitely don't have to send your laptop/PC to the States. Its handy, they come to your house to fix it! and its a next business day guarantee. So its all sweet

If you read Thomas Friedman's new book, "The World is Flat," or watch the documentary he made for the Discovery/Times channel, you learn that Dell doesn't repair its computers--UPS does. They get shipped to a UPS repair facility, often a "clean room" near an airport, and UPS technicians fix your machine. Dell doesn't even know it's broken, and the call you placed to tech service at Dell is probably in India anyway.
This is all to say that the world has changed. Your Dell laptop with an international warranty will be serviced by qualified professionals somewhere--and it doesn't matter where you happen to be when it breaks. And the people in India know a thing or two about computers. |

Its amusing when they all use the same alphabet code to confirm the spelling of something...one that comes to mind is "D for delta". I think they must all go through the same vocal training ! |

You have to ask specifically for a global warranty.

i got a DELL Inspiron 600m - bought it in the US and currently using it here in India. I purchased the global warranty although touch wood, my laptop is giving me top service till date (its been 8 months here!)... like the others have pointed out, ask for global warranty and yes, there are service centers here in India in case your laptop breaks down (i talked to this Dell rep. before purchasing mine, and he was adamant that in case of breakdown, it DOES NOT need to be shipped back to the US)... good luck! |
