vodaphone

i've read the posts and am prepared to bring my unlocked phone, with proof of address, two photos, and a letter from my mother to india. now i'm wondering what provider to go with and am wondering what people's experiences with vodaphone has been.

i like that they have a good website and are an international brand. i'll be buying the phone in delhi, and using it in bhopal, raipur, jagdalpur, kolkata and agartala. (whew.) i think they are linked up with airtel? how will the reception be? i do see something on their website about a "roaming deposit". what is this?

(i'm not worried about roaming charges, as i don't plan on using the phone too much. just so that my mother can call me...)

thanks!

to check the coverage area of each mobile operator (vodaphone, airtel) you check in which states they operate.....in general airtel has better coveage in remote areas than vodaphone

Don't know what Airtel is like but Vodaphone continually bombard
you with advertising on your phone.

Well thats what I experienced last year.

I had no problems getting a sim card (Bangalore)was pretty cheap
and worked everytime.

It is kind of like making an elaborate biryani.. many steps, but in the end it tastes wonderful.

1. Get skype's Philly virtual number.
2. Forward it to your existing cellphone number. This way mom can check
if it works.
3. If you are in India less than a month; get/rent a-sim from a local
(philly or tri-state) international cellphone renter. Their rates include
incoming to be free.
4. Forward skype virtual to your rented cellphone.

[This assumes your mom talks for hours; and you are gonna be less than a month or two in india.]

Vodafone's plans and coverage is not that good (I used them only in metro areas, and they were sub-optimal)

And then there is the Airtel callindia plan.....

Hi

Just to set the record straight Vodafone service quality is as good as Airtel if not better in most of the urban areas. The difference would be in remoter areas - from your itnerary , you may not get the home network in Bhopal & Agartala all the time but you can easily roam on the Airtel Network if that happens.

In Kolkata , Vodafone is way ahead of Airtel in terms of network.

The upside of Vodafone is the service that you get ...

For calling plans , you will find Voda also matching almost every plan that everyone else has .

thanks. the skype idea is an interesting one but i will want to use the phone in india on occasion.

if roaming off the airtel network works, then vodaphone it is, i think. if the airtel network doesn't help me out everywhere in chhattisgarh... well, that's chhattisgarh.

but anyone know what this "roaming deposit" is?

There is no roaming deposit these days. You should opt for Prepaid Plan. There is no concept of deposit in Prepaid.
