Tri or Quad band for India & world

Hi all

I dont know too much about mobile phone bands but am going to take a phone with me around the world and buy pay as you go sim cards as I go. Not so I can keep calling home but for emergencies!

I just have a couple of questions

1. Can I buy a sim card in Delhi

2. People keep telling me to get a quad band phone to go worldwide with, although as far as I know quad band is new. So is a tri band ok?

http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_in.shtml will tell you the bands used in India. Check to see if your phone is compatible with them. Roaming rates are incredibly expensive. You might do better if you get a local indian sim.

Read Crvlvr's post and link first and then this one to find some answers.

I use a Nokia tri-band here...900, 1800 & 1900.

A tri-band phone will be adequate for your requirements and yes you can buy a SIM card in Delhi.

A UK Mobile phone with a UK SIM card will work in India, but international roaming charges are expensive - approx 80p a minute to receive a call (even to your answering service) and £1.30 a minute to make a call.

A UK mobile phone that is SIM unlocked to any network will work with an Indian pre-pay SIM card.

The same phone will work in China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Europe and many other places in the world.

Tri-band is needed for the USA.

You can buy a new mobile phone here in India for a lot less than you would pay in the UK.

Prices for new Nokia phones start at about Rs.2000/- and they will also work with a UK SIM card.

Some RIM (Reliance India Mobile) have built-in SIM cards, so you cannot change the SIM. You are stuck with RIM for ever!

Be careful of the Tri Band with 850, 1800 & 1900 common in the US as this will have limitations in India as the 900 band is important.
