transformers, etc

Hi, we are moving to Chennai and trying to figure out what we need to bring from here. Is it cheaper to buy these things here or there (where?):

2000W step down transformer ($50US)
Digital Video converter (NTSC to PAL) ($275US)
power supply -power backup ($135US)

Thanks for any help you can provide! It seems like they would be cheaper there but who knows!

The transformer may be a bit cheaper in India. 2000W transformer is quite heavy so better buy that in India. Can not comment on the 2nd. item. Is it UPS the 3rd. item? If it is buy this in India.

2000W! What are you going to power with it?

Hmmm... one transformer for a houseful of gadgets, maybe...

A small one would probably be cheaper here, such a high capacity, I don't know.

Digital converter: bring it with you, you'll get just what you want and the quality will be higher.

Power supply... UPS? please specify. I recently bought an APC BACK-UPS 1500 with additional battery for Rs.14,768. You can get small units for a couple of thousand.

India is a country used to dealing with power cuts: you'll find an array of 'inverters', generators, and stuff available here.

Definitely get any UPS, surge protectors, generators, etc - here. Good choice, and good prices....

I've got a 3Kva UPS . Somehow the ordering process got a bit out of hand - but on the bright side it could probably power the PCs, all the air cons, and the kitchen!

Actually, it probably couldn't... you have to check the load it will support too. My 1.5kva supports up to 800 watts.

Thanks everyone, my hubby seems to go a bit overboard on stuff. He has quite the $$$shopping list. He is just trying to make it so we can run stuff from the states with out messing it up. It sounds like it may be cheaper to buy it here as a 1000 power back up unit is $135 in the states.

I would buy as much locally as you can. The voltage difference is a real pain for Americans.

Although stuff you bring with you is likely to be of higher quality, stuff made in India, to some extend, is built to cope with our wide fluctuations. Our nominal 220 volts here is often below 200, and sometimes as low as 180.

And the biggest argument in favour of buying here - the guarantee is valid here and servicing during that period is free. Wud be a bit of a pain to have to run to the US if something goes wrong during the guarantee period! And a desi mechanic wud touch an imported unit only at a hefty premium, I shudn't wonder. I mean one who knows what he's doing.

I wish mind-reading were one of my specialities but sadly it isn't. If it were, I'd start with my own.
