True that about bandwidth. I remember bandwidth issues were frequently experience by my Indian friends. Since available bandwidth shrinks per each user online there are higher and lower useage times probably. I would imagine the quality could be astonishing if I was able to get on at the right time. (maybe I can get on at 3 am) . Since, however, India is doing business with countries on the other side of the world - maybe there just isn't any real 'down' time

I took mine and was REALLY glad to have it. Stayed in more upscale places though and didn't have to worry about it being nabbed. Even though our hotels were 4-5 star ... I still locked it in a suitcase when we left the hotel. It was great to be back at the hotel at night and IMing with my daughters for a couple of hours and not need to find internet cafes. Also great to backup the photos from the digital camera!! If you can handle lugging it, I say take it. And I also agonized over "take it" or "don't take it" -- glad I did!

Don't take the laptop. The less clutter/stuff/possessions the better . And as others have said, there are so many internet cafes available. Too much hassle IMHO.

Whilst I can see the attraction of using one's own machine in one's own comfortable room, internet cafes can also be great places to meet people.

I agree with you, I think for what I am attempting to accomplish I really don't have any other choice than to take mine along (I bought a lighter one especially for the occasion). Plus I have trustworthy friends living in Mumbai, etc, that I can toss it too if need be. I will just take it with everywhere else. Plus the backpack can carry the vid and digi-cams (and my iPod for those intoxicating Bollywood soundtracks anytime I want them) I will have to go to the cafès for the connection, and meet people while waiting for the upload to finish. The best of both worlds!

Also bring with you a USB storage drive. Then you can load up what you want to upload to the Internet to it and leave the laptop locked up in your hotel. Then when you arrive at the internet cafe, you don't have to worry about anything but the little portable drive!

Better still, load 'Portable Apps' onto a USB stick and forget about the laptop.

It fools the keyboard loggers most of the time as well...
