Question Telephones: Starting off.......... BUT HELP!

I am about to start off to India and have got quite a lot of useful information here. However, there are still something that are confused to me......

How can I make telephone call to China? I am afraid I need to call her at least once a day to ease her anxiety. I will stay in Delhi on 23 December and ahead to Jodhpur that night. Where can I find so-called pre-paid card enabling me make phone calls home? By the way, my mum can not access to internet so that telephone is preferred.

Also for local communication, can I just buy a sim card, insert into my mobile phone and make phone calls to other cities. I will travel to several cities in north India? Otherwise, what can I do?

Thanks!

For local communication, you can buy a pre-paid connection from airtel, bsnl, vodafone, spice etc.
FYI, ISD calls are expensive on pre-paid connection.

For International call to china, the country code 86 then the city code. i got it from here

many telephone booths have faulty metering system........ my suggestion check the real cost/per minute calling from ISD calling card and telephone booths.

you can try ISD calling cards of bsnl/mntl and call from land lines- these are supposed to be cheaper

Hopefully you've read this thread as a starter....

http://www.indiamike.com/india/elect...etworks-t8434/

its a great all round, general guide on pretty much anything to do with mobiles, sim cards, etc. The main points:

- make sure your phone is compatible, and unlocked if you want to use a local sim,
- ensure you have plenty of passport photos, copies of your visa and passport for all the paper work involved.

As far as a provider is concerned - you'll find some good recommendations, and abit of advice about some potential traps in the electronics forum.

As far as using a calling card is concerned - I guess you'll have to do a comparison as to whether or not a local calling card, or a calling card purchased in China will give you the best per minute rates. Can't advise you on that one.

happy travels.
