Angry Tata Indicom = horrible service

I just have to vent ...

I have a phone line from Tata Indicom over which my broadband Internet connection (also from Tata) runs because my building society didn't allow anymore cables to be hung all over the roofs.

This phone line is solely used for connecting to the Internet, there is no handset attached to it. I only pay the basic charges, I obviously never have any calls/units to pay. (I pay for the Internet usage with a seperate bill.) Still, last week phone calls appeared on my bill, amounting to over 200 units and about 250Rs.

I assumed that one of their technicians plugged himself in at the box on the street and enjoyed some free calls to friends. The numbers were listed so I called a couple of them - they were all coin phones in a village where I don't know anybody.

So I called the customer service line and filed a complaint. I was told they will get in touch, which they didn't. So I just called them again and was told that my complaint is "invalid" and that I have to pay the calls I made. I tried to explain that I never made those calls but this guy wouldn't believe me, implying that I'm lying.

I'm so angry right now! They have such a bad service, this is not the first grieve I have with them!

The other day I met the technician for the Internet connection and he said they have now put broadband cables underground and soon I can connect to that again and don't need the phone line anymore.

I can't wait!

Such morons!

What are your experiences with Tata Indicom?

My colleague also took a phone line from Tata and their service was so bad it became a bonafide fiasco. Every few weeks they sent a bill and simultaneously cut the phone service. The bill would be paid and with much hassle and grief the phone line would be activated in time for them to send another bill and cut the service again. They never accurately noted when and how much payment was made, to the point where they said they were going to sue my colleague over some few hundred rupees, which he had, of course, paid. They had some collectors calling him for a while and threatening law suits, which he gladly told them to foward to his lawyer. The amount of energy they spent putting into harassing him would have surely solved the problem if they had put those resources into providing good service in the beginning. I have never seen customer service that bad.

Now if they ever call him he says, "Is this Tata?" and if they say yes, he says, "Ta-ta!"

In the old days when I had a dial up connection, I took a tata indicom second phone. No problems. There was a deposit of a 1000 rupees, though.

When I wanted to surrender that connection, they had all kinds of stories about the deposit... we will return the deposit after the cancellation and after we take back the instrument... so I just ran up bills upto the deposit amountand then told them that they can take the instrument away.

Its been 4 years or so, but nobody has landed up.

Well, what about MTNL? I have them for a landline and broadband internet and they're great. My net always works. My bill seems to come out to Rs.1280 every month.

BSNL's telephone help is absolute crap.

But when I actually go to one of their office I find friendly people who go out of their way to solve my problem! Amazing!

Their DataOne 'broadband' service seems to be improving. I'm not offline very often --- you might have noticed !

For internet and telecoms issues in India I recommend www.vinuthomas.com

I am still fighting with them over my deposit refund for a December disconnection. Unexplained deductions, and customer service refuses to explain. I wrote to their corporate office in Mumbai, about 3 weeks back and still awaiting a reply. I am half-minded to file a suit in the consumer court. The amount is small (only about Rs. 150), but it is their absolute refusal to explain the deduction that infuriates me.

manojb, two things I have learnt:
1. in India today, everybody wants to sell. Few want to provide customer satisfaction or after sales service.
2. Because of 1 above, I try to ensure that I am never in a position where they owe me money. Not always possible, I know.

Agree that it is infuritaing, though. Have you considered writing in an email to the local newspaper? As an example, the Deccan Chronicle Hyderabad has a page where consumer complaints are published.. seems to get some results.
