Hi Guys/Gals!

Anyone knows about someone traveling with a GPS around India? Are GPS maps from india available? or Points of interest / waypoints (like temples)?

I couldn't find anything here or in google.

Thanks!

Love
Augusto.

GPS in India

To the best of my knowledge, only maps of Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore are available, and I am not too sure these will work on all platforms.

Currently, the GPS will only be useful to you to carry along to find out the latitude and longitude, and altitude. You could also use google earth to sort of find of where you are, with the latitude and longitude.

Regards

samir is right but in parts. There are actually plans to have car in-built navigation systems with GPS or GLOSNASS (the European or Russian equivalent) network but these will be around 2k7-2k8. There were some pilot trials happening last yr. as well as this yr. Motorola is driving quite some of the studies here in India in reference to that.

I have used GPS in India, but it is severely lacking because I can't find any decent digital maps!

The best I have found is Microsoft AutoRoute. It doesn't show any roads in India, but the main towns are all shown and this enables you to work out distances.

It also shows altitude, Longditude and Latitude and your speed.

In Europe I use a TomTom GPS navigation system. It covers the whole of western Europe down to the house number... if only TomTom had a map of India!

I was asking because I just want the waypoints to temples or places which aren't frecuently visited by tourist and might be a few kilometers from nearest town...
well, I'll do it in the old school fashion (the way i'll allways did it). I'll use the trusty sun to know where the north is and my nose (which is quite big) to know where i'm heading...

thanks again guys!

If you take your GPS receiver with you, you could record the position of all the places of interest you visit.

These could then be imported as POI or Pushpins on existing digital maps.

If enough people were to do this we would have a world-beating IndiaMike database of temples and other interesting places off the beaten track in India!

that's what i was going to do... to record the tracks of my hikkes and waypoints marking temples or other interesting places to share them to other people... And somehow link those waypoints to the pictures i'll take

I'll read something about POI or pushpins (i don't know nothing about them)...

btw.. do you know a good (free) digital map of india?

thanks!
Augusto

Microsoft unveils digital map of India

http://virtualindia.msresearch.in/

January 12, 2006 15:02 IST

Microsoft Research India on Thursday demonstrated the first prototype of a multi-lingual interactive digital map of India.
Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal unveiled the research prototype. MSR India and the Department of Science and Technology began collaboration on this research project in 2005.

Microsoft collaborated with the Survey of India, part of the department of science & technology, on development of the prototype, which also includes an online map of Bangalore in languages of English, Hindi, Kannada and Tamil.

A special feature enables users to add information relevant to their own communities tagged to specific locations on the map, MSRI officials said, adding, the project explores innovative ways to create and disseminate geo-spatial data. Senior vice-president of Microsoft Research, Rick Rashid said MSRI has utilised Microsoft's 'Virtual Earth' technology in the project.

The Web-based interactive digital maps use this technology, which also powers the 'Windows Live Local mapping service,' so users do not need to download and install any software to use the maps, MSRI officials said.

Geographic data from the Survey of India were used to create the India wide map as well as the detailed street-level digital map of Bangalore. MSRI said it also plans to add greater detail and more languages to the maps.

The prototype enables the addition of information such as the location of polling booths, it was stated.

Ladahk/Zanskar Maps with UTM Grid

If you happen to be heading to Ladakh or Zanskar the you can buy a series of three 1:150,000 maps by Editions Olizane that cover this area. These are marked with a UTM grid that you can use with your GPS. We used them last year in Ladakh. Not sure if any other maps further south are available.

Armed with your GPS you can have endless debates about the spot heights of passes and peaks etc compared with the land-surveyed estimates! Enjoy!

When I was in India last week, I use nav4all for the navigation, the software is based on Java and you need to downlod from www.nav4all.com to your phone, you also need a gps receiver connected to the phone. the maps of chenai and mumbai are very clear. I use a headset and follows the audio guide when walking down the street.

The software is free till 8.15 this year, i dont know how they are asking for later on, but as long as it is free, I will use it.
