Question Storing pictures on your trip

Is there a way to download all your pictures and send them to an emial account or post pictures that you have taken so far on your tripp to some destinations to free up space on your memory card while you are traveling? Or should I just invest in an extra memory card and be sure not to loose them? I guess I'm just wondering what most poeple do with their digital pictures or what options our out there for traveling and taking a lot of pictures. Thanks!

Just burn 'em to CD at the cyber cafe. For safety's sake I'd recommend doing two discs of each set of photos so you have a back-up (you could mail one home immediately even). There are other solutions, like expensive dedicated portable hard drives that automatically download and store pictures from your memory cards, but to me that seems like overkill.

I took 3 memory sticks of 256mb each; had plenty of space for three months' worth of photos.

my ultimate tech. travel set up..

please read the following i wrote before my trip 1 yr ago. after returning, i would say that it's great to have all the technology, but with batteries (5sets) and chargers, all this stuff was bulky. I would recommend a compact AA battery camera, like the new cannon 6x zoom at 4 or 7 Mpix. Bring a pocketable camera. I ended up taking ALOT of pictures when i swithched to digital. it's so fun. so try to have enough memory cards. it's easy and cheap to print to cd at most cities. Go light, it's such a hassle having too much stuff if you'll be doing alot of travel. plus the worry of losing it. good luck.

if you haven't left yet and you're into recording music,

get a Sony Hi-MD minidisc player for about $200. get a microphone for live recordings. (make sure minidisc has mic-input) You can record 33-45 hours music per disc (tiny 3" square ,15grams). don't buy any more memory cards.

then buy the sony mcmd-r1 card reader for $100 ,
connect it to your minidisc with usb cable and you can store 1 Gigabyte of photo's (500 pics for a 4Mpx camera) on each of those minidiscs.
or 4 x256 Mb cards worth.
it takes about 25 minutes though. whenever your card fills, dump it onto a disk untill it's full then pop in another. one set of AAA batteries (get rechargables and bring a charger for your AA bat. camera) will last you over 2 Gb's or 2 1/2 discs or 1200 pictures or more.

then stop at a photo place at your convienience to burn to cd, or just take enough of the minidiscs and you are set.

the card reader is on amazon,us and maybe sony's site if they restockerd them yet. HiMD players are all over.

after much research I got the fuji s5100 4mp 37-370 zoom. it's an awsome camera. a bit larger than the compact ones though.

if you just want a hard drive i've heard compact drive makes the best ones. a new one is due out in jan.

for c.d. burners, the apacer disk steno cp 200 seems to be the best. you make your own cd.s as you travel of images, but it's about 3 pounds with everything. the minidisc setup is ultralight weight.

that only took me 3 months to figure out. i hope it helps someone.

a great way to store photos

If you are in a fairly big city try Reliance Web World. I've seen them in Delhi, Jaipur, and Varanasi. It didn't even take 10 minutes. They take your card, upload your photos, and burn them to a CD. SOme places supply the CD, some places they don't. I made a CD yesterday and it cost 52rs, including the CD. YOu can even print out a contact sheet of your photos. It was great.

Hmmm...

I'm still rather stumped. I'm still a couple month away from my trip to India, but looking for the best way to bring back my digital photos. I have an 8MP dSLR camera, and shoot in RAW mode (where 1 gb cards hold ~100 photos).

I was considering my laptop, as several people I've read appear unworried about any misshaps. My laptop is 4lbs, and rather small w/a 60gb hdd. But I'm not made of money and should anything happen.. I might just lose it.

I've been trying to look at portable storage devices (PSD), and there are just too many. I know you can download at certain locations with USB from the camera to a CDR, but really, I don't want to spend time locating these places in every place I go to.

I currently have 3 x 1GB cards, and that doesn't last me very long, I'm an advanced amateur photographer (I do sell sell to magazines, etc), and easily shoot tons of frames..... So buying many compact flash cards doesn't help.... because it can be costly.

I NEEEEEEED ADVICE.... HELLLLLLLP!!!!

Vadim, I don't think there is a cheap, easy option for you. It's either you spend money on more cards or a PSD, risk your laptop, or frequent cyber cafes. Most people don't have 8MP dSLRs and most people do not shoot in RAW mode. If you want to shoot tons of frames at such a high quality, you'll have to invest your time in cyber cafes or invest your money in more equipment.

Vadim

I'm currently looking at "Syncbox" [ http://www.macally.com/new/new_syncbox.html ] or similar product, We wouldn't need to carry laptop around everywhere and may be transfer images to a 2.5' inch usb external drive.

There's several solutions out there, such as the X-Drive II, the Tripper, Super Digibin which offer 20, 30, 40, 60+ Gb solutions. I'm just not sure what can be trusted. So many new ones come to market, many appear to fail after but a few months.

I've been surfing many digital photo sites as well, and there doesn't appear to be any concensus. Oh well... I'll let you all know what I do. Who knows.... maybe the laptop will follow me onto the plane.

I hear from most of you around here that theft in India is minimal, and people might be more in awe of my laptop... but I think I might be more worried about the risk of damaging somehow... (I've dropped $6000 CAN of camera gear a couple years ago.... I cried my eyeballs out).

Thanks for your replies so far!

You can check out this forum at DPReview for lots of info including user reviews and discussion (though there is a relative low "signal-to-noise" ratio at times): http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1023

I would also recommend personal article insurance if you're worried about your equipment. State farm is supposed to have reasonable rates and they don't require that you have renter's or home owner's insurance: http://statefarm.com/insuranc/addins/personal.htm

My situation is similar to Vadim's (though my equipment isn't as nice!), and I ended up buying a CompactDrive PD7X with a 60gb drive for my trip next month. It seems a little ridiculous, but I've had bad luck with cyber cafes in the past. Including rechargable batteries and shipping, this cost about $240 US...

Personally, I'm thinking of getting the Gmini 400.

I already have about 2Gg worth of CF cards and some weekends I can fill them pretty easily.

Yeah, was looking at the PD7X, but some people troll about it on dpreview, I'm really curious to hear your feedback about it, do let us all know your opinion on it. I've also considered the Gmini 400, but it's only 20Gb (yes yes, I know, that's still a lot). But I'm predicting a rate of 100-200 photos/day, hence 1-2gb/day and I'm going to be in india for 21 days. So that makes it 20Gb minimum.

I agree about the signal-to-noise ratio on dpreview.com, it's horrible. There's more b*tching and complaining than actual conversations about the questions.

Thanks again, and I'll post my feedback/decision or possible decisions.
