skype to go

just thought i'd post about a skype service i recently discovered (not that it is new). you can get a "skype to go" number in several countries. this allows you to make a local call to get a discounted international rate (the same rate as with skype out). basically, it's skype's version of a calling card.

you can't get a skype to go number in india, but i'm using it to provide an easy and cheap way for my parents to call me. they are elderly and punching in numbers sometimes get complicated. with skype to go, they dial one local number. they then push 1 to select from speed dial numbers. they can then push 1 again to select my mobile number, which i'll set up via the web once i am in india. my skype account gets billed for the calls; their telephone just gets billed locally. (ie, not at all.)

of course, this is just generally a handy thing to have on your phone when you are at home... and the speed dial feature makes it so easy.

There seem to be all sorts of deals going in USA.

A friend of my wife's has been on the phone for about an hour this afternoon: it seems she (somewhere near New York) now has a connection that allows free calls to India!

Vonage is advertising that for $24.99/month one can make unlimited international call. I'm not a vonage user , so I don't have a clue about the call quality

There are people using Vonage here in LA. I havent heard any issues about the quality.I prefer airtelcallhome.com plans. It works out to be 600 mins for $10 for a validity of 45 days.
