Does anyone have any idea whether or not skype has caught on yet in india, and particularly the north (delhi, varanasi, darjeeling...)? Thinking it could be the ideal way to talk to friends and family in the uk and reassure everyone im alive and well!

Skype: a great way to make phone calls

I'd just stick to 15 cent a minute phonecalls, so you can make them on the street anywhere you like, and to any landline/cellphone of your chosing rather than a computer when someone's logged in.

forget skype,

get a vonage land line from your home country and forward calls to a local rechargable cell phone.

Skype works fine in India.

We have Skype in the offices in the UK and India and the voice quality is far superior to landlines and mobiles phones.

Using SkypeIN allows customers to phone us on a standard UK phone number, and we take the call in India.

Using SkypeOut allows us to call overseas for pennies, but we do also use VoipCheap to call the following countries free of cahrge:

Australia
Belgium
Denmark
Germany
Italy
Liechtenstein
Luxembourg
New Zealand
Norway
Spain
Sweden
United States
UK

Thanks for confirming - good peace of mind for the peeps at home. Might also try some of the cheap international call providers- Cheapestcalls, Discountdial etc.

Google Talk is not as cute as Skype v2.

Voice quality is inferior, and there's no video.
