Simcard - resurrection?

Hey geeks,

I hope you can help me here

Last time I was in India - in 2006 - I bought an Airtel simcard in Rajasthan. I brought it back home with me.

Now I'm heading back to India. Do you think that my precious little card can be revived?

Thanks for reading.

No, I looked into this myself. Unfortunately, once they're dead they stay dead. Not only that, but Airtel won't credit you with the calltime that was left on the dead SIM card.

On the plus side, calls are still very cheap and a new Airtel SIM card is only Rs 99 - though obviously it costs more than that in time and the irritation factor.

So I will never get connected to my little friend again?

That's sad. I really liked my number too.

Stupid Airtel.

But thanks to you Haylo for helping me on this question

Don't be too sad, it's was a good number and it's gone to the happy place in the sky with all the other dead numbers.

Actually, this is India, I should have said that it will be reincarnated as another lovely new number for you.

If you want to pick a good number, go to a larger outlet and they'll have a number of "SIM Packs" that you can choose from.

Okay, suddenly more questions overwhelm me.

Is it still needed to go through all that "sign here and here, show your passport, give us a photo of yourself" etc. to obtain a new SIM card?

I would like to buy one in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. If I make calls or send texts to, say, Rajasthan, will it then be more expensive than calling within Andhra Pradesh?

What a sweet thought

That definitely helps me in the process of getting over the loss of my good old companion

Yes, and a long form to fill in, giving details of the colour of your aunt's favourite cat and so on...

If you go for Airtel, you can find the roaming rates on their website - it's something like www.airtel.in, but really it's not at all expensive.
