What kind of experience have you guys had with using power converters in India (for American products)? I'd like to be able to plug in my laptop and my battery recharger. I don't think need a voltage converter for the laptop, but I think I do for the battery recharger.

What's a good, light power adapter? Preferably with surge protection. I haven't had too much luck poking around online. I've found a few ones that seem pretty good, but they either don't convert voltage or don't have surge protection. Could I buy a battery recharger in India that would do a good job of recharging American AA NiMH batteries?

Pretty accurately stated. You can get convertor at any travel store/Radio Shack/Fry's/Best Buy for the battery charger. I just use a big transformer I bought years ago in Pune. The problem with the laptop is going to be surges and wild power variations. At a minimum a surge protector would be advisable. If you get a compact one for the laptop make sure it is appropriate for your make. Line conditioners can be a ton but..

I found a good little power adapter with world-wide plugs that fold out of a small cube at Wal-Mart. It had surge protection (essential) but doesn't do voltage conversion. These devices are hard to find, that's why I was surprised to see them in Wal-Mart.

I would consider a solar charger : my guess is that is about the same weight, you need not worry about surges and outages and you can use it on the bus (put in a clear bubble bag, then in a mesh pocket on your pack). Here in Sweden they sell at something like 30 dollars.
