Don't!

The answer is "no computer". Take your notes on paper. Transfer your pictures to CDs at cyber cafes. You don't need a computer. Trust me, they're a huge liability if you're travelling around a lot. You'll be a target for thieves, and anyway, the damn things are heavy.

You could always go to a cyber cafe to use a computer, but it sounds like your mind is made up and you're going to have your computer no matter, so to answer your question, I recommend a second-hand 12" Apple iBook. They're going for $400 to $600 on ebay, depending on features. Get one with OSX and iPhoto and you're be off and running. Good luck!

I've debated about whether or not to bring a laptop for quite some time and I've decided to go without one. As iyou said, laptops are extra weight and you'll always be worrying about it getting stolen or damaged. Memory cards for cameras are REALLY cheap now, so a few 512mb ones should suffice between stops at cyber cafes.

US is cheaper for laptops, however you could check out the rental option with insurance against theft.

I have this same problem. I regularly (daily) keep a journal on my computer at home. I have a journal writing software on it and everything. This becomes a problem everytime I travel. So, when I travel, I'm reduced to writing in a paper journal. There are pros and cons of course. A paper journal is a much less liability and weighs nothing next to a laptop computer. Plus, you can whip it out anywhere and write all over it. At the same time, I type way, way faster than I can write with a pen, and my hand won't get tired typing the way it will when I write with a pen. I finally came up with another solution, and that is, get a high end PDA and use a portable keyboard with it. Its cheaper and smaller than a laptop and will still allow me to keep a "typable" journal. I have yet to try this method of keeping a journal though.
