On my recent trip to India, I noticed quite a few people next to me in the Internet cafés plugging in their own USB thumb drives before they started checking their email. They seemed to be running portable versions of the Firefox browser, and possibly an email client like Thunderbird. Some folk were simply editing photos on the drive, sure, but quite a lot appeared to be doing something more sophisticated than just opening Internet Explorer from a desktop shortcut.
Is this a shift in behaviour coming from better understanding about the risks in Internet cafés? Does the majority take steps to protect personal information (passwords, credit card numbers, etc.) when they enter it on a public computer? I wrote a short survey to try and get some answers. Please come over to my site and add your opinion - it will take around two minutes of your time. Take the survey here

Not to put people off your survey (please let us know the results!) but we have done this subject pretty extensively and recently in this thread

![]() Seriously, though, cybercafe security's an issue which comes up repeatedly, and I wanted to get a small statistical overview of how people sense the dangers and behave when online on a public computer. For the results you'll have to wing on over to my site. ![]() Apologies if I needed to have created the survey here - it's been such a long time since I was swabbing the decks on the good ship IM, I have lost touch with its current Netiquette. |
