Phone compatibility

I would like to give a relative in India a gift of a phone, and also I am thinking of bringing my laptop so that I can commune with the net while I am gone. I live in the U.S. Are the phones/phone connections (plugs and whatnot) compatible?

phones

Most North American phones do not work in India unless they are Tri-Band GSM world phones.

The Americans follow a different standard than Europe and Asia. Also get a phone that has a dual voltage charger.

Nokia and Sony Ericsson have somoe goo dtri band phones, I use the latter iin Canada.

Most laptops should have dual voltage adapter, ie 120-240 V. So they should work.

Are GSMs mobile phones? Excuse my confusion. The phone I was going to buy for my relative is a land line, a regular phone that plugs into the wall, not a mobile.
My question re the laptop concerned the connection to the modem. I think in the US the plug is an RS242 or something like that.

Yes then the phone will work in India, and whatever cables you need ( if a need arises) aare easily available in India.

I've got a Dual Band Motorola V50. Is that compatible with India?

Indian Landline Phones

India uses the European standard from what I understand, the line connections may be the same as the US but the system, and if it is a powered phone then the voltage and the plug will be incompatible. There are excellent phones in India, buy a good one there.
