in terms of maintenance
My big problem was mold in the lenses but cleaning in the states wasn't too bad. The film capstan broke but had it machined in India at a trivial cost. Now my precious machine which I paid 4 months wages for is sitting in a drawer..

I agree that film is dead - so many redundant shots and the drag of carrying exposed films for months. Tis sad though - many of us have film SLRs and lenses that cost a bomb.

Agree with the earlier post about taking silica gel with you & packing it in with the camera (in sachets).

Chemists (in Oz) charge a fortune for the stuff. If you want to get it easily/cheap, contact the IT department of your local University /TAFE, where computers are constantly being unpacked and deployed to staff. Most of the boxes will have silica gel sachets (of varying sizes) and you can get them kept for you.

As for buying the older (non DSLR cameras), plenty of secondhand camera dealers will have these for sale. In Old Delhi, there's a camera market (around 1km from the Old Delhi Railway Station) and they have an assortment of film cameras for sale.

Cheers
