welcome to IM, jebr12.

There is not much of good reception, in the region. The only service in region that is active is BSNL service, which is not regarded as a reliable operator in major metro's due to other operators Advertising strategies. Moreover, thats the only service to answer your question.

About Internet, the place if talk about is Leh, then it is quite easy to find the Internet Cafe's with USB ports in PC's. But in other areas of Spiti no such major internet access or to b frank only one i came across was in Tabo, at monastery itself.

Happy Hunting for Northern India.
Any more Q's feel free to ask.

The other thing about BSNL is that it is unavailable to foreigners. AirTel has provided me with an excellent service until recently when my SIM has stopped receiving SMS. They have not been very efficient at solving the problem but I live in hope! Their coverage in HP is limited to the main tourist regions...Shimla, McLeod, Manali, Mandi etc.

In fairness to AirTel the problem has now been resolved. It took them a few days but I gather the problem was a bit unusual...that's what they implied anyway!

GPRS Mobile coverage India wide

Hi,

I'm goign to be travelling to India in Feb for 4 months. I'll be working a little while there and need to know which network has the best coverage? Last time i went i got an orange sim in Mumbai only to find there was no coverage in Goa. This time i'll be all over the place and need to use my PDA to pick up emails via GPRS.

Does anyone know of a good nationwide provider who offers GPRS?

I use RIM (Reliance India Mobile) and it has always worked wherever I have been in India.

I use Airtel for my normal mobile phone and RIM mostly for Internet.

The RIM phone has a fixed sim card so you can't swap it.

In and around Ooty (Tamil Nadu) the signal coverage on Airtel is not as good as other networks... often, friends have a signal and I don't!

Just to let you know, RIM does not use SIM cards because they do not use the GSM format which is the format being used in the UK. From your post it sounds like you have a GSM phone which would rule out RIM.

In the Northern half of India, Airtel has the best network after BSNL.

Best mobile roaming service in India?

hi
I will be travelling in Uttaranchal ( Kumaon and Garhwal) and also Himachal.
can you geeks tell me the best roaming mobile phone service in India? I know BSNL has wide spread coverage and there is no roaming rental charges.
In these states, which other Mobile operator has an active presence and what will be the roaming charges?
Thanks

Hi, Check out for BSNL, Airtel & Reliance.

BSNL charge for receiving calls if you are out of state.

In fact, most networks do.

However, I don't pay extra for making calls on Airtel or RIM when I am out of state.

The principal I work on is that sim cards are so cheap, I buy a new one for every state I spend a long time in!

I have sim cards for Mumbai, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

They only cost about Rs.200/- each.

Have fun!
