Hi people.
Simple question. I will leave for Mumbai and try to live there for 2 years. I want to buy a laptop. Here, they can cost between 800 and 1300euros, and even more then...(+warantee+etc). So what's your advice people, should I buy one here in France, or Should I wait to be in India? and...I was thinking my first language is French, I am not sure I could understand all the "technical" explanations about sofware in English... The use? hmm MUSIC, internet connection, watching DVDs, photos (nothing very technical) (+ studies) thanks ![]() |

Whereas much imported electronic and luxury gadgetry is expensive here due to high import duty, this seems not to be the case for computer equipment.
You could try looking for comparative prices on the sites of the big multi-nationals by telling the site you are India (or giving .in instead of .com is one thing you can try)

I'd recommend buying it in India for the following reasons:
>Your warranty will most probably be void if u buy the laptop in france. >Cost wise - buying in India will be cheaper. |

Laptops start from Rs.25,000 here...a decent "run of the mill" kind will cost you around Rs.30-35K..i.e. around US $ 800.

A decent laptop will cost approx 50k-60k INR. I still suggest you buying it from Mumbai esp if you going to stay for long (2yrs). Intl warranties are pretty complicated, it might cost you dear to repair just in-case of any problems if you buy it from France. Also at the current rate of progress in technology your equipment could be pretty out-dated in 2 years time.

You can get a laptop for as low as 32,000 upwards here in Mumbai from companies like Dell, HP-Compaq, Lenovo and Acer. Of course, these would be low-end, no-frills machines without all the bells and whistles and connectivity options of the Sony VAIO and Toshiba Qosmio sort. I would recommend the HP Pavilion series for a good price-performance compromise. Dell and HP probably have the best support of all the brands I've mentioned but Dell has the advantage of being factory-direct even though it does not always use the best parts around.
For Internet connectivity you could get a wireless Data Card (or USB modem?) from Airtel or Reliance. Not sure about their service as I've never used it (or spoken to anyone who has). WiMax is creeping in but too slowly for my taste. Trials are on in New Delhi and Bangalore but its not an option to consider for now. Apart from this, Wi-fi is available at many hotels and coffee shops such as Barista now. None of these will be fast enough for you to view streaming content or upload photos by the disc-ful (is that a word?) but you should get to email, blog and browse regular web pages. And listen to your music of course. |

nothing much to add to the posts above re the options available in India except to suggest that if you buy a laptop here, check the specs of the machine carefully. Presumably when you buy in France, an entry level laptop will have something like 512 meg or 1 gig or ram, at least a 60 gig harddrive (hopefully 80 gig or bigger), windows vista, or XP professional,or tablet edition, etc, microsoft office - and so on. Sometimes in an effort to keep prices low here - some machines will have 40gig hard drives, 256meg or ram, free dos operating system, no virus software, no office suite, etc. All of that stuff is extra.
re internet connectivity - there are plenty of other threads in this forum outlining the highs and lows of that experience... ![]() |

Most of us aren't too worried if our equipment is out of date in two years. We can't afford be!

While your pref for checking the techi stuff is in French, would be difficult to get it to someone to do any repair outside of France. So if you have to take it to a HP/Dell service center in India, they might charge you to install the language thingy in.
Also even with international brands, models released in each market is unique. Hence, you may not be able to get easy service for a model popular in France if there need be a service in India. And even if you are not able to decipher some of the techy stuff, almost in all offices there would be a handful of nerds with whom you can consult for many fix's. Hence, overall I would suggest against picking up in France.

Laptop
I have 2 laptops bought from overseas and would certainly advise you to buy in India as the warranty is not valid in India. you get all the updated configerations in India and prices are very competetive too.

It happened this way that one of my frnd got a laptop from usa. Somehow for some reason he had to contact the support & they said the model is not arrived in india..so they cant provide support on it.
Try www.anandtech.com or cnet asia version.
