i don't really care about the spelling but I do want to know about experiences travelling in this region. I've been told that the only possible way to get around this area is by driver. I was more hoping to to go a specific town (Haveli) and then cruise around on day trips.

How did any of you folks see this area? Easy to do? If the driver is the only logical way, what am I looking at in terms of cost and providing for the driver? I've never hired a driver. I'm a solo female traveller. not to say that I couldn't hook up with someone who also wanted to check out this area to help defray the costs of the driver.

Well anyway you get my drift? What's the story?

Do you mean the area north of Jaipur?

I have no info with me at the moment, so can't check the spelling.

Hey, so I guess you folks do need the spelling after all! although my guess is that not many people have been to this region. I have my LP with me now, it's the "Shekhawati Region" in Rajastan, north of Jaipur as steven_ber has mentioned.

I'd really like some first hand experiences on visiting this region. Worth it, not worth it? Anyone have a good experience with a driver in this area? Where did you get the information for hiring the driver???

The area north of Jaipur is called Shekhawati. This region does have havelis, but havelis are huge houses, not towns !

Yeah - I've been to this area - it's well off the beaten track, but well worth the effort. After some favourable reports on the area in the Rough Guide, I ended up having to hire a government run taxi to take me from Jaipur all the way to a small village called Nawalgarh (it wasn't cheap - about RS.1500 I think). It was a great journey and the driver spoke excellent English. Stayed in a 'tourist pension' there - I've put it in the hotel listings in the Rajasthan section - along with some pictures. Spent 3 nights there before moving on towards Bikaner. Had a great time. Best of all, I didn't seen one tourist the whole time. The area is full of 'havelis' - ceremonial buildings, which if you're lucky a 'guide' will be happy to take you around. Nawalgarh is full of splendid examples, covered in beautiful paintings. One of the havelis I visited was being used by a wedding party - they were very welcoming and invited me to sample some of their wedding feast.

Anyway, this village is a great place for taste of this area - however it's spelt...

Spelling it is one thing, pronouncing it is yet another. I remember speaking with one client over the phone about accom. in ShiKAHvutie and she kept saying No, no, we wanted to stay in SheekuhWATTY.
