Is there a photography etiquette when taking photos of people in India

I'm going to India and I plan on taking hundreds of pictures, some including people. Is there a certain etiquette that I should be aware of when taking photos of people? Is tipping customary? Thanks!!!

Varies with the situation - some temples and areas you are not allowed to take photographs . It will be obvious - usually a sign will be there, or someone will rapidly tell you.
With people - many love having their photos taken, no problem. Some you might have to ask first. In touristy areas you might find children dressed up in traditional dress offering for you to photograph them - they will expect a tip (5 -10 rupees). Not only children too - adults can say to you 'Photo?" and they will also expect a tip! You can say 'no' if you don't want to photograph them.

To add to Aishah's comments above, you should respect the request of people who ask not to have a photo taken.

If you want to do candid photos, use a long telephoto lens and be discreet. That's how I've got some of my shots.

The question gets asked quite regularly.

If you scroll to the bottom of this page, you'll find a listing of "similar threads." Opening any of those will again feature a list of similar threads at bottom, and so on and so forth.

You'll find similar queries there.
