Is it possible to buy a reliable laptop in Rishikesh
Not sure if it's possilbe. But I just want to write. I want the simpliest laptop I can possibly find but completely reliable, solid nonetheless. Just wondering if anyone has ever attempted to do such a thing. I was told electronics are overpriced in India. Am I better off having my old laptop sent to me from America? Curious....

I would assume it's cheaper to fedex a laptop from America to Rishikesh than it would be to buy a new laptop, considering that even in the states really basic ones start around $700. There's no way it could cost $700 to fedex a laptop to India.
Or you could just do what I did and buy a pen and a stack of school-kid composition books. Unless you're planning to write a novel, that'll probably do you just fine. Edit - for under $200 USD you could have your computer shipped from home, according to the "get a quick quote" I did on the fed ex website. Last edited by the opoponax : Mar 6th, 2008 at 21:15. You might be right, but I wouldn't assume that, because you'd get involved in customs clearance, and that might wipe out any savings.
Domestic electrics, like LCD TV's, are expensive here, due to high impoert duty. Computer equipment, on the other hand is not. You should be able to get HP, Compaq, Dell, Acer, just for example, or home-grown HCL. I don't know why anyone should think it would be difficult to buy here. There's plenty available here, so you may as well support an Indian business!

I agree with Nick
Last october I bought a HP pavillion notebook at about the same price as I would pay back in Holland. And that was in a small town at a local store |

Why would customs clearance cost $500?
I've shipped internationally to India before (for work), and there didn't seem to be any extra charges unless the item itself was subject to import duties. Since travelers to India are allowed to bring their laptops in without paying an import duty, I don't see why there would be one in this case. It's just one computer, right? And even if you had to pay $200 more in fees, that would be less than half of what you'd spend on a brand new computer. Certainly, if you were going to buy a new one anyway, want to support the Indian economy by getting one there, etc. I wouldn't avoid doing it. But in terms of price, it's going to be MUCH cheaper to ship your laptop to Rishikesh than it would be to buy a new laptop. |

You're allowed to take one with you, duty free, on the plane.
You are not allowed to ship one in duty free, even your own old one. That was the basis of my thinking on this. RandomAxis... useful looking site, I'll check it out, thanks. |

You can always peruse the Ebay-India-Laptop listings. There are some reputable dealers with 100% feedback. If they don't have exactly what you want online - contact them & they may be able to source, pack & ship it to wherever you are.

OP asked whether to buy in Rishikesh - is there a large market there? I would think a bigger city would be better - I bought mine in Jodhpur, HP, and so far so good. Price was no dearer than similar one back in Oz, in fact could have been slightly cheaper.

I'm glad it wasn't just me thinking that. It's not the "can I buy a reliable laptop" bit, it's the "Rishikesh" bit! I'm wracking my brain trying to recall an electronics shop in Rishikesh.
Meditative CDs - check Incense - check Tie-dye skirts - check Instant Enlightenment - check Laptops? I'm drawing a blank on that one. OP are you in Rishikesh? Or going there? If going there from Delhi, why not buy in Delhi? More choice, if nothing else. |

Err, yes, I'd probably look to the nearest big city.

That's also true -- while I haven't been to Rishikesh specifically, I found it hard to find basic everyday stuff in big tourist meccas of India. You don't even KNOW how hard it was to find a warm blanket in Hampi, let alone a good computer!
You should also take into account the shipping charges of having whatever you buy shipped to you from a major metro (Delhi, probably, in your case). I should add that my assumption was that you'd prefer to just have the computer you were using at home, not that you were comparing whether to buy in the US or India. |

You can buy computers here, very limited selection, and the prices are around 2,000 rupees more than if you look in Jodhpur. So if there is a computer shop in Rishikesh I shouldn't be surprised if there is a larger mark-up on the same model available in larger city.
