iRiver MP3/Photo player?

I'm thinking of getting an iRiver MP3/photo player. Can anyone recommend them? The one I'm looking at is the PMP-140 - 40GB storage and apparently you can connect it direct to your digital camera to download your images. This sounds fab for travelling. The problem is it seems to have quite lame reviews from what I've read on the net. Does anyone know from personal experience? Is it worth buying? I know it's also a movie player but to be honest I'm not so bothered about that. I'm just interested in music and storing photos easily on the go. Will it work with any digi camera or only specific ones??

I like a lot about this exact machine too, it's definitely under serious consideration for my next trip. Could you let me know where you read those reviews of it? I want to read as many opinons on this thing as i can.

Like yourself, I'm not much bothered about the movie playback, and I was wondering about camera compatibility as well as whether it worked with Mac OS X. Turns out (unsurprisingly) that it doesn't have any issues with Apple, although I had to dig a bit on the european iriver site to confirm that (mainly using the 'ask iriver' bot, alice , quite helpful 'she' was too, once i found 'her'.)

I also found this list of cameras that they seems sure do work - I suspect those are just the ones the've tested themselves and that that's therefor a far from exhaustive list. That said, on that page that linked to that one was the following text -

"The PMP players can communicate with most devices that are "USB Mass Storage" compliant. This excludes most digital cameras including Sony, Canon, and Kodak cameras. The players can read from a few digital cameras, but most will not be able to plug directly into the player. If you are looking to get files directly off of the camera without a PC, we recommend getting a memory card reader at a local electronics store. Otherwise, if your camera has a USB port, you can get files off of the camera using a PC, then copy them to the player without extra hardware."

So, from what i can gather the best idea to ensure compatibilty, is to carry an additional USB card reader that matches ones camera's memory card. Not really a big problem.

Ideally, I want a portable device that - works with Mac OS X, has at least a 30 gb drive, has a decent battery life, plays MP3, uploads JPGs, displays JPGs, plays WAVs, records MP3.

And it's so far the only thing short of an actual laptop that fits the bill, as it should for just short of £400..

I know a few people that own and have nothing but good things to say about iriver products, but they all use them pretty much exclusively for audio purposes.

Price on Amazon U.K £389

Price on the first U.S site I checked ('geeks.com') $389

389$ at todays exchange rate is £213..

Semi - you can buy it on eBay for much less! :-)

Thanks for all that info and the links. Will check it all out as soon as I get time. If you do get one please let me know how you get on! I just read the reviews online - typed in PMP-140 into google.
