An iPod is great in India, try to download some songs in the language of the area your going to, it can be fun watching children listening to them on train journeys, you can also download some information that may be useful on your trip.

Warning, remember the re-charging lead!!!!

I forgot it.

A Firewire-USB adapter would be extremely handy too.

With the Digital Camera LInk from Belkin you can transfer images directly from the digicam to the iPod ( check belkin site for compatability) .

Vistet,
I have been looking at purchasing the belkin cable as well but I had some questions about it. Was there anything else that you needed other than the cord, camera and Ipod? It just seems too simple. Did you encounter any problmes with runnning out of space on you Ipod?

Ipods are great

I brought mine on my last trip and it was really worth it...even though I brought it loaded with music and some audio books, I never used it for that: its real usefullness came from downloading pictures, using the Belkin digital camera link.
The only pain is having to recharge it every night. (it takes just about all night to do)

Busted..

I´m just a wannabe ´podder
Went to Scotland this summer ; with the money spent on buying extra memory cards `cos the readers wouldn`t read and transfer them I could nearly bought an iPod.
But yes (from reading up fairly extensively) : if u have a camera that is displayed on the desktop ("USB mass storage device" in techie lingo) that is all you need. The camera link has it`s own batteries which hopefully means that it doesnt drain the iPod or camera (remember to kill the screen when downloading).
I`m not too sure about the file structure, but it`s probably a good idea to use max 512 MB cards for easiest burn-to-CD process.

The chargers is where these solutions start to feel less portable, with different voltages , batteries etc. I keep hoping that someone will come up with an universal charger , sprouting different cables with the right voltages .. pro`lly impossible with patents and such..

As for the size : so far I`m still on my first 40 GB hard disk at home , with 1132 5 MB pics (2744 MB) on iPhoto, 1261 tracks (6.3 GB) on iTunes... plus a lot of heavy programs.. so I wouldnt worry.

I am too burning Cd's like no tomorrow but I purchased an IRiver. I went for an Iriver as I thought it was a better deal than the Ipod. I got all the accessories such as external battery pack, carry case, remote control and its 40 Gig for $650 (aus). The other thing I love is that I can attach my Digital Camera directly to it without having to purchase a Belkin card reader.

But really it doesn't matter if its an Ipod or Iriver, its just fantisic to have all your music while you travel. Techonoly is just amazing these days.

iPod mini/iBook combo -- 3GB (668 tunes) loaded, another gig available for what I run across in India this winter.

I've had the mini for a couple of months now and still marvel at what a beautiful, well-designed piece of work it is. (sounds good, too! )

Until then I'm still burning mp3 CDs, not so bad I can get around 150 tracks on a CD and my cheapo gadget plays mp3 CDs, audio CDs and VCD handy for the odd bollywood movie along the way!!
Picked it up in India for around 40 euros, just another idea!!

If you are buying in the U.S. (and probably Canada too), it seems that the iRiver H320 does not have the ability to download directly from a digital camera. Two sources on the net say that this feature has been scrapped.
