I think some people are just more susceptible to AMS, too.

And it tends to strike in a fairly indiscriminate way. Funnily enough, just prior to feeling rotten I'd been up to the Rohtang Pass (over 3000m I think) and only had a touch of breathlessness, so should've been well acclimatised.

The nastiest thing was next morning we were all off on our separate ways so had no chance to make up. Thankfully we got to write later + settled it all. Ooff...

For all thoses people worrying about their mp3 players ... DON'T

Most mp3 players these days contain solid state memory (these can just about go through the wash without damage) but if your mp3 player is particularly heavy (you know that solid expensive feel the ipods have ) then it could be a good idea to check if it contains a hard drive instead.

btw ... I'm not recommending you put your mp3 player in the wash, just pointing out how hardy solid state (flash) memory is

It's gone really well ... I think I tired myself out after a while with all the planning and researching I was doing!

But I've got some great ideas and am at least in part going to follow my nose. I can't wait, just wish I had the money to pack up and leave right away!

The neurotic´s (=my) solution to all of this would be to store the ipod in an airtight box when going over the high passes. Otterbox sells a basic storage box that seems to take all the iPods , or custom models that allows operation ( but not uploading photos).

As for the solid state memory in most mp3 players and digital cameras (flash memory, memory sticks, etc); they've done various crazy tests with those, and they found that the data is still there even if you freeze it or boil it or throw it off a cliff. You'd have to run it over with a steam roller to really lose you data.

No problems in Leh

I had my Ipod Mini in Leh last year, I had no problems. I was certainly at altitudes higher than 3000 m.

Does the iPod manual have some sort of disclaimer?

For example, iPods work on planes. "The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires all commercial airlines and many non-commercial planes to maintain a standard level of cabin pressure (kept at the equivalent of 5,000 to 8,000 feet, the altitude of Denver and other Rocky Mountain communities)"

So the iPod works at 8,000 feet but crashes at 10,000 ? I decided to investigate.. I looked up some specs for hard drives and they all have a max. of 10,000 feet (~3,000 mts)!

After all , ´puters work (most of the time) in Leh and Lhasa. I found a site that specialises in in expedition gear and they gave laptop recommendations for base camp use .. but they recommended a backup. They also sold standard PDA´s that have ben used on Everest ascents , so I think we can put the the blown-out LCD argument to rest (there are also a number of sites with road descriptions Manali-leh , made with GPSés) .

You are right. Do you really want to know what happens to human body at low pressure? Its not very pretty. Just ask a deep sea diver.

All commercial jets are pressurized (not sure about the PSI). The pressure inside the jet is usually higher than the pressure outside. This is exactly the same reason why guns are not a good idea to be carried on a plane (after 9-11 some people asked that air marshalls carry guns but it was deems unsafe as a small bullet hole accidentally fired by a gun can cause lose of pressure which could rip the plane's metal body.

Anyways, the cabins are pressurized and thats why the ipods work safely inside a plane. :-)

Actually they start at the ambient air pressure. Pressure is created by ... holes , in the forward direction. As long the plane is moving it can build up and maintain pressure.

The idea that the plane is a overpressurised bomb , ready to rip open from one puncture .... well I also saw Goldfinger , but still not convinced.
