Internet Privacy ------ Advice needed

I have just had a screen pop up that I haven't seen before. The title was
Protect your privacy ---- Microsoft Internet Explorer

and it said

Your computer is recording the following
Websites visited - Chat Sessions - All Pictures viewed - pop-ups loaded. Your credit card info - All your activities can be tracked from anywhere.
This could be your last chance to protect yourself
Click here to permanently erase your tracks.

Well I didn't click there. I just closed down the screen.

Did I do the right or wrong thing and can anyone explain what was going on?

Get 'ad-aware' and get rid of all the spyware on your computer (like Gator, etc...) if you want to reduce the problem.

ad-aware is available here:

Actually get AdAware, Popup Stopper and Zone Alarm and then nobody can identify, track or bother you. Still get spammed, though.

Thumbs up Evidence Eliminator - common spam

Alan, I think you saw the advertising for "Evidence Eliminator," a piece of fairly lame software hawked by numerous agents for amazing markups (the software bought direct is a quarter of the price from the spam bunnies). Got $150 to spare?

The best cleaners for all Internet junk I've found are WebWasher and Proxomitron. These block cookies, advertising, popups, referrers, animations, background music... Blocking at least the first four is essential to secure some privacy.

My homepage has a section "Online Zone" (recently updated) that includes much more information on online privacy generally, and using WebWasher to block popups specifically. Everything I recommend is FREE!
