Internet Cafes with Macs?
Hi;
I am a web developer and probably need to bring my mac laptop with me to India, in case I have a problem with a clients site while in Delhi, Aurangabad, Mumbai, next month. I would rather not bring it, as it is expensive and I am paranoid about having it with me. But that's what I use to work on and all my tools are mac-based. Are there Internet cafes with Macs or a way to find out(I have my doubts) in those cities? I could just bring a portable external drive and plug into a usb or firewire if there are macs around. I would prefer not to have the extra 4.5 lbs strapped to me at all times either. But If I have to, so be it. Also, do hotels generally offer a place to store laptops safely? |

I havent come across any Cyber Cafe which has Macs. It is better to bring your own if you do not like Windows Otherwise is there a software which simulates Mac on Windows?

Then the options left is to learn to use those tools on Windows or just carry the Mac.

In India Macs are for elites and cyber cafes are for public......
so never the twain shall meet !

atgdesign there are no cyber cafes with Mac computers. You may find a Mac hooked upto the internet at an Apple Store. Most of the cyber cafes in India (even the best ones) use the cheapest available Windows hardware, to keep down the costs !! Like delhiwala put it Macs are for elite. Just to draw the comparison. I got an IBookG4 in 2004 for a handsome price. At the same price I could have got 2 windows based laptops. Best bet, carry your own Mac. Most of the good hotels (in some cities top end hotels) provide safety vaults where you can stow away your valuables.

I dont do the things you want to do with your Mac, however I did bring a Macbook with me to connect.
Also I brought a firewire cable and was able to connect in Gantok, Calcutta, and wherever I wanted to in an Internet cafe, also on the slow Mobile Office Whats this about Macs being expensive, they are super but heavy. I had no problem about safety, just keep in a discreet bag. |

We are Macs only at home but on the road in India we have only seen Windows computers at internet cafes throughout the country - north and south.
If you must use a Mac, you'll probably have to bring your own. We have an iBook that we use just for travel, as opposed to our desktop and our MacBookPro that stay at home. We've taken the iBook to Japan, but to India weve relied on what's available at cafes. We have seen others connect their own laptops at cafes in Delhi and Mumbai. Re: cost of Macs in India - in an airport somewhere in the north I was amazed to see a display for Macs showing their (it seemed to me) very high prices. distaff half of hfot2 Last edited by hfot2 : Jul 16th, 2009 at 10:00.
