Indian DVD Players (Region Code Issue)
Indian DVD Players ?(Region Code Question)
Do you know if DVD players available in India wil play DVDs from other region codes -- especially US?
Info on DVD Region Codes:
Seven regions (also called locales or zones) have been defined, and each one is assigned a number. Players and discs are often identified by their region number superimposed on a world globe. If a disc plays in more than one region it will have more than one number on the globe.
1: U.S., Canada, U.S. Territories
2: Japan, Europe, South Africa, and Middle East (including Egypt)
3: Southeast Asia and East Asia (including Hong Kong)
4: Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean
5: Eastern Europe (Former Soviet Union), Indian subcontinent, Africa, North Korea, and Mongolia
6: China
7: Reserved
8: Special international venues (airplanes, cruise ships, etc.)

I believe that players in India are region free (ie. region "0"). At the very least, I know it is easy to get region free players in India which will play your region 1 discs.
citybell, I don't think you have a region problem. Maybe the VCD you bought from China is an SVCD which is a format not supported by your Samsung player?

just a quick tip incase anyone is viewing DVDs on a laptop:
usally on laptops, you're either stuck with one region or you can alter the region code of your drive a fixed number of times. After that, you're stuck. However, you can avoid this by using a program like Videolan (http://www.videolan.org/) which will decode DVDs from any region, without altering the firmware of the drive itself.

Why do you want to watch DVDs in India?
Unless you are moving there I can't see why you'd want to.
VCD rules in India, If you have DVDS you can't Live with out, copy them into VCD format and buy a VCD/CD player while you are out there.
