India adaptor
Hey everyone, I've just bought one of these for my trip to India.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/..._ya_oh_product I bought it because one of the reviews specifically says that it works in India. However, looking at it, and comparing it to pictures of Indian power sockets, it doesn't look to me like it will fit. Please could someone let me know if it will work? I'm going very soon and I'd like to get this sorted beforehand if possible. I know you can buy all these things over there, but if I sort it out now it's one less thing to worry about when I get there. If this is not the right adaptor, perhaps someone could provide a link the correct one. Ideally I'd like an all-in-one adaptor/surge protector but this isn't critical. Hoping you can help, only got a week and a bit to go! Many thanks in advance, RP PS: If I can get one that works in Nepal as well, all the better ;-)) |

It might work, The European two-round-pin fits Indian sockets loosely.
See the many other threads on this topic: best to buy in India. Are you old enough to remember the OLD UK round-pin system? That's what we still have in India. |

Thanks Nick...much appreciated. I'll take what I've got and buy another one over there if I'm not happy. Are all-in-one adaptor/surge protectors readily available, or will I need to buy separates? Thanks again, mark.

Here's how I do it, except I graduated to attaching a four-way to the Indian plug as I carried more and more things needing charging.
![]() I saw those three-round-pin plugs available in John Lewis in London only a couple of months ago; I suspect you can get them from any good electrical shop. Buy a light 4-way, or even a six way, and make it all up before you go. |

Whoa, that's a neat solution. So you make this up yourself then? I'm not much of an electrician, but I know a man who is
And I'm guessing the surge protection is in addition to this - right??Many thanks again Mark |

An adaptor will cost 30-50 rupees. A board with surge protection easily available and not expensive. Search the site - this has been covered in detail before.

Thanks Brisso.....sorry for asking questions that have already been covered but time is running dangerously short for me and still got lots to sort out. Had a load of stuff finally arrive today but most of it is wrong or not what I ordered and has to go back....EEK!! Gonna leave the adaptor stuff 'til I get there, more important things to concentrate on first. But I do appreciate your replies (and you Nick
) . A big cheers to both of you ![]() |

I use a similar solution as NickH. I bought a 4 way adapter socket from Poundland and a friend got me a quality plug from one of those elctrical factor shops (where electricians buy their supplies from) in England. Works really well and not had a problem with it. You could buy an adapter that includes spike protection and do the same.

Electric Supply Pins Plugs Adapter etc explained [hash]35.
Wandering socket, yes thats what they are called, its a plug with a lead that can be moved , Readily available in India, weight little and not so clumsy as a 4 way poundland adaptor. 3 pin plugs are everywhere in India, max 10/-, it not rocket science to wire one up....... what did you get taught at school? ![]()

Yes, they are readily available, but you will get an "international" type socket, which will not be made as well as even a cheap UK-bought 4-way. Your plugs will fit, but maybe not perfectly.
I even have trouble with the "international" wall sockets, and they are made by MK, a multi-national company. Supposedly. |

I've been travelling around India for the past three weeks and everywhere I've stayed I've been able to use one of the little 2-pin continental adapters that you can pick up in Poundland and similar places. That includes on trains where there have been plenty of 2-pin sockets in the AC sleeper and chair coaches. Haven't seen any in the general unreserved coaches though. Try and avoid those if you can!

Yes great if you want shoddy cheap plastic that is far too brittle for my liking. The Poundland 4 ways in comparison are robust and will last several trips. I left a couple in India about 4 years ago and they are still working fine as other relatives who go over use them.

It's not just the plastic, it is the contacts too, which are not sufficiently springy, so soon loose contact.
