Does anyone know from experience how the internet is in the Dharamsala or Mcleodganj and whether its better to stay in Mcleodganj or Dharamsala for it? Will be travelling up in that area in 30 days or so.

I know there are internet cafes, but is broadband available to be hooked up in ones apartment and what kind of download speeds are we getting? My work is online so reliability and speed are important to me, maybe best if I just stay in the city?

Thank you.

Hi,
I was in McLeod about a month ago and I did notice that you can get wireless in a few places. Places like travellers cafe's etc. I think you would be more likely to get wireless in McLeod than in Dharamsala as it is far more touristy up there.

If you are in India for a little while you would be best to get a dongle (not sure if that is the totally correct term for it) USB connection. SIMS are usually very cheap (70Rs) and the USB dongle about 1500RS. You can get a 3g USB connection (faster) which is more expensive - about 2100RS I think. These are rough costs from memory. I bought a 2g SIM and the connection varied depending on the time of day (always faster in the morning). You can check out BSNL or AirTel online - I expect they will have more information.

If you want to get a SIM you have to get a copy of your C Form and passport and visa and go to register at the companies office. It is instant once you have given in all that info.

Good luck - sorry it has been a little vague but I hope I've helped a little!

I used an Airtel 3g USB dongle last month in that area, worked fine. Cost 1850 rupees with 5GB included. Quite fast as well. I think Indians call it a 'USB modem'

Good call on the usb stick. There is a place in Mcleod Ganj where you can buy the service. I got the Idea Net Setter USB modem, cost for setup was about 2000 rupees, with 5 gigs free.

The speed is surprisingly good, and is at its best in the early mornings I noticed, anywhere from 1am-10am.

Its nice to be hooked up!

Idea Scmidea

Hello There,

So Airtel and BSNL sound good.

This may be too little too late: I am staying in Lower Dharamsala, I have a small notebook so it's naturally slower than a laptop BUT I just bought a dongle with a 2G Idea SIM and went for the 400 rps unlimited internet access-IT DOESN'T WORK!!!!! It took one hour to open Yahoo this morning and look at one email. Nightmare.

If I were willing to pay 1100 rps a month, I could get Idea 3G limited access.

I shall look into changing my SIM to a 3G as I can't bear the one hour one email deal!

Any further recommendations or back ups to previous recommendations would be really appreciated.

Thanks,
Sarah

Hi eyesopenin,

I'm thinking about travelling to Dharamsala. I'm also working from my laptop, so I really need a good internet connection with good upload and download speed. How's the speed (upload and download) with your USB dongle?

I'm currently in Goa, where USB-speed is really really bad (but most of the restaurants have pretty good wifi).

Thanks a lot!

Sorry to hear about all these crappy connections people are experiencing.

If you come up to Mcleod Ganj, then you'll be fine! I'm actually surprised with the speed up here, and i'm comparing with internet from the States.

Not sure about Dharamsala, although its just a walk away to Mcleod, the services that the stores offer may be different. If you stay in Mcleod, hit up the local store here in town and ask for the Idea net setter usb modem. Seems all the shopkeepers use it here because it has the best connection.

2000 rupees for setup and they start you out with 5 gigs. It took me about 20 days to go through the 5 gigs and I do a lot of web surfing, research, uploads and downloads for my work since i'm in web development, good enough speed for it.

If you surpass your data usage early you can just go get a recharge, no need to wait till the month is up. This time I got loaded up with 10 gigs to last me a month, which I probably won't go through entirely, but it was cheap enough at around 1250 rupees.

Go for it!
