I would assume kb.

If your on your own computer you should have some sort of image editor. If you are using a digital camera almost all of them come with some sort of image editor.

You would want to look for some sort of image re-sizer in that program or something that would compress the image. Photos taken with a digital camera are not exactly web friendly and usually need some adjusting.

1024x1024 is quite large and I usually suggest a size of 800x600 since it's the most common monitor resolution.

If you don't have any program there are many for free available on the web under 'free image editors'.

Maybe somebody can list some free editors that they have used.

I do it like this using MS Paint.

1.Open the big image with MS Paint (hope all PCs have)
2.Click ‘Image’ on the top menu
3.Select ‘Stretch/Skew…’ from the pull down menu
4.In the Stretch ‘Horizontal’ and ‘Vertical’ fields enter identical % reduction values
(eg. 50 and 50, 33 and 33 ; depends upon who much the image size you want to shrink.)
5.Click OK
6.Click File>Save As….(give a new file name so that the original is not affected)

Now look at the file size of the image through the windows explorer ‘Size’ column.
If you are not satisfied with the size repeat the same exercise (step 1 to 6) with a still larger/smaller ‘Horizontal’ and ‘Vertical’ values on the ORIGINAL big image

I also use a program called Xnview which is free.

I use it mainly for browsing the millions upon millions of images that I have.....yeah way to many I know.

It also works as a convertor to shrink images down and it's pretty good.

Kodak image editor unfortunately doesn't work with jpg or gif (or at least the version I have doesn't).

If you use XP, you can go here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p.../powertoys.asp
Download and install the image resizer. It's so easy to use. Simply right-click any image (can aslo select many at a time) then click on 'Resize Pictures'. Very staright-forward from there.

Hope this helps...

Thanks beach and rocon, both the options work well as far as changing the size of a photograph is concerned.
However, my scanned JPEG images have a white background(of the scanner), how do I remove it?

If you want an excellent free media programme, that photos, movies and audio, great for doing all sorts check out Irfan View www.irfanview.com, it is in my opinion really the best for ease of use.
