How difficult is it to unlock Att samsung locked phone?

I bought a Samsung eternity locked to Att from craigslist. It is a GSM quad band phone. I would like to take this to India and use a local sim card. I have the unlock code from Att. But when I type the code , I get the message 'phone freeze,deactivation failed.' ATT customer service says somebody tried it more than 5 times and now it is permanently locked to Att and now I cannot do anything about it or I can resell to somebody on the Att network only.
The person who sold this also gave me a universal unlock Sim card, but these cards work with certain models only. I do not know if this works until I come to India and use it along with a local sim card. Is there anyway I can get this phone unlocked in Hyderabad?

Should be possible, I think. Go to any decent sized shop 'repairing mobile phones' and they will probably do it for you, or tell you where it can be done.

amav, i had the same problem, called tech support, who transferred me to the manufacture, and they eventually gave me the steps to unlock my locked black jack.shouldn't be a problem
