Help with file recovery

Hi there,

My friend has a corrupted audio file. Can anyone suggest a way to find someone who can help recover the file? We're in Pune at the moment but it could be done over the internet, although it's a big file (401 MB).

Thanks!

Eddie

That is a big file - and given typical internet speeds here in India it could take a while to upload to a data recovery service. Might I suggest trying a couple of file recovery tools first? Try this....

http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/sy...arecovery.html

there are a few freeware programs that might help (I've used a few programs from this site - they are bug/ virus free and generally well supported). It certainly wont cost anything to try. Failing that - there must be a street/ market somewhere in Pune where you could do this? Sorry if this doesn't help.

good luck

Hey BB, I guess OP is not talking about Data Recovery, however they have 401 MB of gibberish. It was supposed to be a Audio file, however corruption due to a bad download or some other reason has left it useless. If its a serious problems and not a silly mistake, then I don't think any vendor would be able to fix that, but experts in that particular file format itself, and I guarantee they won't be easy to find. But again I am making a guess...

Hi Shashank. Your right - might be unrecoverable but probably depends on the type of file and the nature of the corruption. If its a data file stored on a PC/ mac - its still going to be 0 & 1s - and some of the recovery programmes have pretty clever data repair tools. Worth a shot I guess.

A lot would depend on the technical competency of the OP..

Thanks guys! Technical competency of OP and his friend is pretty darn low, I'm afraid. I guess we'll give the shareware site a shot first and go from there. (I actually don't know the nature of the corruption so if that info will make a difference I'll try to find that out and post again.) Thanks again for the speedy speedy response!

Hi there,

If it is a corrupted audio file, you could try to load it into a good wave editor (Wavepad Sound Editor for example)
It is very good with raw info and can very often repair corrupted files, since it reads the raw track.
If needed, you can edit it and then save it again.
Worked a couple of times for me.
Not sure if it will work for you, but it is worth a shot

If that doesn't solve the problem and the file is really important (and worth a lot of money to get recovered) you could contact someone with an audio studio who can read raw data and let him / her do the rebuilding of the file.
Basically the same way as you can try yourself with a wave editor, but they often have more sofisticated software and hardware as you can get yourself.

Good luck!

thanks Nick.

Although I don't really consider myself an expert.
I just have been working in the supportfield for over 10 years now and for various companies in various branches.
I'm just lucky that it has allways been my hobby from childhood on
